How do I post my art?

Postby Spike » Wed Jun 21, 2006 8:43 pm

I am creating this thread because I came across variations of this question SEVERAL times and it really only needs to be answered once.

So this is an FAQ answering "How do I post my art?"

Q1. Do I need a scanner to post my art?

A1. It depends. If you art is DRAWN, as in, created with pencil, ink, marker or paint, then YES you will need a scanner. Don't despair, scanners are very inexpensive, around $99. Once you have scanned your art, you must save it as 72dpi (or 'save for web') *.JPG, *.GIF, or *.PNG.

Q2a. How do I make art on my computer?
Q2b. What do artists use to make art on the computer?
Q2c. What is a tablet/which tablet should I buy?

A2a and A2b. There are hundreds of programs available to create art, and you can create your artwork in programs that are as simple as paint. MOST professional artists use Adobe Photoshop because it is the most powerful and versatile program. It is also the most expensive and one of the most difficult programs to learn.

It is not the only one, however. Some other art programs available are:

A2c. A tablet is an instrument that most professional artists use to help with their art. If you are SERIOUS about art, it is a very good investment. If you're JUST STARTING in art, I recommend waiting until you have good real-media drawing skills and a basic understanding of photoshop. If you are good at drawing and understand the basics of colouring- go for it, tablets are a great investment and they last a really long time. I still use the 4x6 I got when I was in grade 9!

As for what type of tablet, the answer is definitely graphire. They are the industry leader. There are less expensive knockoff brands, but I do NOT recommend them. Sometimes they don't have pressure sensetivity, or ridiculous things like batteries in the pen, or they are just really poor quality... just go with graphire. The good news is that any size will help you out (The Graphire) and the sky is the limit-- you can go pretty much as fancy as you want if you have the money.

Q3. How do I get art off my computer and onto the internet?

A3. Once you have your image ON your computer and saved as a 72dpi JPG, you must find a place to HOST your image. This can either be at an online gallery (like DeviantART) or an online filesharing service (like PhotoBucket or Imageshack)

 1. Go to PhotoBucket and create an account like you would anywhere else.
 2. Sign in and click the button that says "BROWSE"
 3. Find the image on your computer and select it
 4. Click "UPLOAD"
 5. Scroll down to find your newly-uploaded image!

Q4. How do I put images on the forum!?

A4. If you have your art on a gallery like DeviantART, their site won't let you put the image directly onto another site so you must use the URL links. GO TO the page you want to show at deviantArt and copy the URL (the http://... in the address bar). Then link to it by pasting it on the forum.

OR if you are using photobucket, Login and find the image in your album. Below it should say URL, IMG, and TAG. You can use either the URL link like this:
Code: Select all
It's a pubby!

Result: It's a pubby!

or the IMG link like this:
Code: Select all

Heh, yeah. thought Spike went blonde for a moment.

Well written though Spike, this should certainly stem away, as it probably wont eradicate, the requests that frequent this forums fine threads.

I've already know how to make pictures on forums, but thanks for your help. This is more useful than I think.

For Q2b. I'm wondering what kind of things can you do for line work? Thats my biggest problem. Vector programs like Illustrator are hundreds of dollars if you know what I mean.

I have a question to add:

If I have an account on ImageShack and they are being Superhero gay and won't let me upload a file that they accept, what should I do?

What does it mean if your art thread topic (the actual title of the thread) is purple and the image all the way to the left (the image explained by the legend at the bottom of the page) doesn't change even if you and art?
There are those that still remain watching. Image
