The whole point of Edwards character is her ambiguity and androginy.

And Nix is right...anime started sucking real fast and hard. I still love Cowboy Bebop but too much of anime now is getting way cliche and stuff. But I'll always have Serial Experiment Lain.

Speaking off...I was reading a book for one of my classes on the origin of multimedia art and philosophy (this class is like basically new age philosophy for people working with computer interactivity). Anyways like I knew 2/3 of the names in their from Serial Experiment Lain. Weird.

Nix wrote:Argh, all those stupid names too "Inymusha" "Miyomisha" "Blahblahblahisha". Why can't shows have names that mean something in English?

Inu Yasha means Dog Demon, more or less (few other trasnlations I'm sure)

Nix wrote:I can't stand anime any more, too much gay yelling and flying through the air.

Flying is very rare in Inuyasha, and they don't yell pointlessly when they are running, like DBZ (plus fights are short, instead of 30 episodes for one event)

and (spelling here) half-demon would be Hanyou, full demon is Youkai, ogre, or demon can also be called Oni.

Yay, more editing.. The reason I like Inuyasha is because its not like 90% of other animes where everyone flys, shoots energy or captures monsters. The main people aren't all-powerful, they don't fly and its actually really funny.

I don't care, I just can't take it anymore. Anime was cool for a while when it was fresh and new, but like every other fad out there it was quickly seized by marketing executives who managed to saturate popular culture with it until it oozed from every nook and cranny you dared peek into.

I'm just fucking fed up with the bastardized crap that floats across my TV screen and ever store window I look I at.

Fuck all of it.

Hey we did it!

dude just use the head of Knuckles there. It looks pretty bad assed. I know DBZ is the same thing over and over. and I liked it the first time and I'll like it the next 20 times. The art increases dramatically each Saga and that's 90% of the fun for me. that and Vegeta... Oh Vegeta you rule so much.

I'll always like the weirder anime thats dramatic. Grave of the Fireflies is one of the best MOVIES ever let alone animes or even animated movies. Ghost in the Shell was like a visual overload, and SEL as a series is more a work of art than entertainment. For every good there's a bad though. Most of what upsets me is all the damned pokemon/digimon rip off shit on Fox. I mean pokemon was DECENT...DECENT and only when it had Brock in it. To rip off such a show automatically forces you into horrible pits of stupidity. Some of the crap doesn't even make sense. There's one show where these chefs prepare food that turns into a card, that when used turns into a fighting version of said food. Called fighting Foodons or something and its the most god awful disrespect to humanity ever.

I think the Pokemon show is a perfect example of everything I hate in an Anime show. I didn't even look at Digimon.

On a side note, the pokemon games were sweet.

Yes the games ruled all, and I liked the show merely cause Brock was one of the most hillarious characters ever. It was like he instantly fell in love with whatever girl he met. The rest of the fuckers with the pokeballs and such needed to die.

Pokemon RULEZ, and the card game ROCKED, the GB game was also alright, and Brock made it SOO much better. Vegeta DOSE own (hence len-geta, get it, GET IT). DBZ DOSE suck, but the fight scenes (few and far between) are fucking awsome (unless you count Gotenks vs. Evil-Buu). I like anime MOSTLY for they way they draw, I like it better than cartooning (most the time, cartooning can still be WAY cool stylised (Samuria Jack fuckin rocks) ). Anime IS WAY over exploited. And Dave, I TOLD you they were all not there, and you would get mad at me. Yes, I am an orical, for my predictions are correct. But I have to re-download a few (eric's scanner messed up one CD) and then burn I think two, then I'm done. So get me straight. You've seen everything good and dandy up to ep16, and nothing past, correct?

Oh, and Dave, HALF THE STORY!!! You don't even learn anything till like ep17, the story just started for you.. or is about too. When he fights Diablo is were the story starts to come in, and it STILL dosen't tell you anything till like 3 episodes later.

Dave: You fucking rule again. I aslo think Vegeta is the best character of the DBZ team.

I'm also aware of why DBZ seems to be nothing but long fights and yelling. First of all, there's onyl 1 really long fight in the entire DBZ series, and that's Goku's fight with Freeza. There's a good reason that took 14 episodes: It's cause they made too many episodes too fast, and they caught up with the author in terms of story. So they had to buy some time in order to let him write new issues. Every fight after Freeza is quick and to the point.

The Yelling is an adrenaline/scare tactic-like thing. What's scarier? A man running at you with an axe, or a man running at you with an axe, screaming like a mad-man?

I think condemming an entire genre just cause you've had a few bad experiences isn't a good idea. I agree that Pokemon is one of the embodiments of all the evil that can (and sometimes is) in anime. But then compare it to Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Patlabor, Love Hina, and Perfect Blue! There are massive differences between those shows/manga, and most of those I listed kick ass.

Not to mention that the art of anime is influencing many people. Dave was right when he said that DBZ's art improves with each saga. Compare something from the recent Buu Saga to the original Dragonball show. The shows were treated as one, so it was the same people doing each. But an evolution of the art is evidently apparant. This art is catching on. A lot o modern American shows are now taking advantage of this medium.

If I was to take this to an extreme, and advance the clock about 50 years, Hollywood is where live-action (and 3D) films are made. 2D animation is made in Japan.

There's no way to escape it. :snoogins:

I dunno Alex...seeing as how all japanimation has its roots way back in American 2d animation I couldn't say that with a straight face. I think America will always have 2d animation. It'll probably just be on more comedic subjects rather than the more serious stuff anime can focus on. Plus the fact I think Disney movies recently have been absofrigginlutely beautiful in terms of art work. Lilo & Stitch was just amazing. Plus as far as TV shows go there is no anime cartoon out there in a rating slot higher than American cartoon shows (Simpsons, the powerpuff girls, and sponge bob square pants are the few I can think of that were way up there. Sponge Bob Square pants on average holds around 2-4 top 10 rating slots on any given week last time I checked).

I think Anime could have a very bright future...just not right now. Its over saturating the market with bad anime and thats gonna scare people like Nix away from the genre in whole and I think thats gonna bottle neck the popularity of the genre. That and alot of people in the generations above us look at anime as a "geek thing" because they went to school with the first rising generations of anime geeks. Its sad but I've heard people say to other people "Oh you watch Dragon Ball Z? You must be one of those anime geeks?" So they're not gonna be as receptive to their kids watching it.

For the record, Cowboy Bebop bored me to tears, and I gave up on Trigun after watching 15 minutes of an episode that consisted of this:

Guy in jacket runs across the sand: "YI YI YI YI YI YI YI YI YI!"
Stupid Girl 1: "Is that Vash the Stampede?!"
Stupid Girl 2: "es, I think it is! Wow, Vash the Stampede!"
Stupid Girl 1: "Oh my gosh, Vash the Stampede!"
Stupid Girl 2: "Wow, it IS Vash the Stampede"
Guy in jacket: "YI YI YI YI YI YI YI!"

And so forth.

I'm sorry, but if thats the best anime has to offer, fuck anime.

For Drama: Grave of the Fireflies
For Philosophy: Serial Experiment Lain, Ghost in the Shell
For Action: Vampire Hunter D

I really haven't found an anime that was so funny it made me laugh hysterically except for a few of the porno style animes...and I dont think that was their intention...but its how it came across. Funny as hell.

I thought Ranma 1/2 was funny, and overall good plot. Trigun is good to, to me, but yeah, there is a lot of annoying "YI YI YI YI YI YI"... ALOT
