[Challenge Yourself I] - ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN! (VOTE!)

Postby Spike » Thu Jun 22, 2006 3:06 pm

The contests are baaaaaccckk! :D I am also modifying the format of 'Challenge Yourself'. I will explain my reasoning for everything at the bottom, it will only be explained once. You may suggest changes to the format, they will be discussed.

CHALLENGE YOURSELF I
"Ultimate Showdown"
Challenge Yourself is an Official Snafu Art forum contest. It operates on a bi-weekly cycle, as explained below. The prize is respect, and having your image preserved for prosperity in the 'hall of win'. As the title suggests, the idea is not to best each other, but to best yourself!

THEME
This week's theme is The ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN of Snafu. We have had the addition of many new comics since the contests died, so this contest is, in a way, to celebrate this new alliance. Submissions should include characters from PPGD, GT, Snafu, Tin, EA and ZIM. Crossovers are encouraged, but not necessary.

RULES
 • Only visual art allowed. Art must conform with the Snafu Art forum rules.
 • Art must be created WITHIN the cycle time. You MAY NOT use art you created last week, last month, last year, or ever before this cycle. These pieces may be posted as demonstration of the theme, but MUST be marked as previous work.
 • Multiple submissions totally allowed.
 • Submissions may be included in the fanart gallery of Snafu where appropriate (with credit, of course).
 • Submissions must include characters from the Snafu comics, but may include other characters.

Judging
Submissions will be judged by ME (spikecomix). In the event of my absence, I will appoint a guest judge. The criteria for judging are: CREATIVITY, EXECUTION (skill), and EFFORT. Please note that you are judged against YOURSELF (your previous demonstrated works) and not so much against each other!! In this contest, a new artist who puts in a tremendous amount of creativity and effort can defeat an experienced artist who has more skill and experience, but didn't push themselves.

Judges may enter pieces into the contest, but they will be exhibition only.

The Process
Challenges operate on a two week cycle. The contest officially begins on MONDAY (I'm giving you guys a weekend head start :) )

MONDAY: Contest begins, submissions accepted. Submissions will be accepted until the FRIDAY after next (almost 2 weeks later). (Start: Monday, June 26)

FRIDAY after next: Winners will be announced, no more submissions accepted (but may be posted just as exhibition). SUGGESTIONS for the next Challenge begins. I reserve the right to reject challenge suggestions based on vague-ness, being too similar to a recent challenge, or unfeasibility. ONE SUGGESTION PER MEMBER. You may change or withdraw your suggestion ONLY before the poll begins. (Submission end: Friday, July 7, 2006!!)

SATURDAY: A poll will be put up in the same thread with the suggestions. Voting begins. Suggestions will no longer be accepted once I start to create the poll. (Saturday, July 8)

SUNDAY: The poll will close, and the winning suggestion becomes the next challenge. In the event of a tie, I will cast the tie-breaking vote (I will not vote in the poll except in this event.) (Sunday, July 9)

REASONING behind Structure
I will explain why everything is the way it is in this opening contest only. That way you all understand why I ask that things by done the way I do. :)

Jam, why do you have seemingly unlimited power in this competition? Who do you think you are!?
I've run many-a-contest, and I can tell you this: Democracy is a good system, but it is also a system that takes a long. ass. time. Having a judge is way faster, and it makes sure that there are no ties (and resulting need for tie-breakers and more time.) I also hate 'popularity contests', so having a judge is better in this case as well. There is a risk of bias when having one judge but... well... when I tried it with 2+ judges one was always gone for some reason and delayed the competition. I'd like to think that I am fairly impartial, if you disagree you may say so.

Why did you change it from weekly to biweekly? That's too long/short!
I found with Weekly Challenge that it was too little time for people to complete their submissions. However, I feel that if I go farther than 2 weeks, I'll run into apathy syndrome: people will forget or postpone creating their entry so that it will not get finished. This happens a lot in monthlies, I've observed. We'll see how two weeks works out.

Why did you change the suggest-when-you-post and winner's suggestion is next format?
I found there were a few problems with this structure: Sometimes the winner's suggestion was unfeasible, or only interesting to the winner. Sometimes there were ridiculously awesome suggestions that were passed up because they didn't win. When only entrants can make suggestions, we lost out on some potentially really good ideas. This way, people will be drawing what they want to draw in contests. I feel this will increase the motivation.

Well, we'll see how these rules work out :) GOOD LUCK! aaanddd GO!

It doesn't have to be a comic. It can be a comic.

I just had the perfect idea. If anyone steals it then I'm going to throw a tantrum.

Spike, thank you so much for bringing the contests back. <3

Though the misunderstanding of the theme returns, from me this time. XD So basically we could draw a picture of any of the characters from the comics joining forces or something like that? In a helping-each-other mood right?

Again, the misunderstanding of the theme returns. ^_^;

Guys! Not that hard! Draw a picture with at least one of the characters from one of the comics! Simple!

I'm sorry, Lynx. This is what I get for being such a second-thoughts thinker. Anyways, good to know. I'll have an idea up in no time.

I'll enter. I'll try to include characters from everything except Ever After, since I haven't really read it yet and don't feel like going through the archives just for this contest.

Lynx has got it right. You may draw AS FEW AS just ONE character from ONE of the comics and it will qualify. You may draw AS MANY AS all of the characters from here OR even more, by including characters from somewhere else.

The theme is 'ultimate showdown'. You may interpret that theme however you wish :) It can be collaborative/team/versus or something else! Be creative ^_^

Added after 2 minutes:

Actually Erix, yours is the type of pic I had in mind as what would be good for entries in this contest :) If it's any consolation, you can't enter it but at least you were th einspiration for this comic :D

I really hope I dont ever inspire anything. God if someone emulated me, the artist who basically emulates bleedman.......I think time would stop.

Seriously though, thats cool. I know I cant enter it, I'm sure I'll come up with something. I hope I'll come up with something

I... Will... Try...

*Faints in her pile of work*

I never understood why I couldn't draw the PPG properly... Does bleedman's characters have some kind of protection against copy that Erix could bypass? xD

....

Huh? Fanart is a grey area of the law.

If you can't draw the PPG, now's your chance to try :)

Nothing to be sorry for, Keeper. ^_^ Just trying to clear up the general confusion. I'd make up an entry, but our scanner's dead, so I'd have to use our digital camera, and that never works well. >.< Ah well, maybe next time.
