Depends on the bar and the country, in the US most bars pay the tip minimum wage which is less than half the usual minimum wage. It seems like Europe it's at least the same minimum wage as everyone else. Certain bars might pay better than others because they respect their bartenders and wouldn't want to train a new one.

Whatis has got it. the pay often isn't great but it's never below minimum wage, because we're not expected to survive off tips like americans are. the reason for this is because brits are terrible tippers.

also what the fuck's the point in a minimum wage when you're allowed to pay below it?

Mmm, not much beats the smell of cooking turkey
"Suddenly Frodo noticed that a strange-looking weather-beaten man, sitting in the shadows near the wall, was also listening intently to the hobbit-talk. He had a tall tankard in front of him, and was smoking a long-stemmed pipe curiously carved. His legs were stretched out before him, showing high boots of supple leather that fitted him well, but had seen much wear and were now caked with mud. A travel-stained cloak of heavy dark-green cloth was drawn close about him, and in spite of the heat of the room he wore a hood that overshadowed his face; but the gleam of his eyes could be seen as he watched the hobbits."

That's possibly one of the things that's equal, agreed

I have heard of that band before, although don't recall any of their music, probably heard a song and not known it was by them. Concerts are fuuuun.

Because if they had to pay more they wouldn't be able to hire as many people, blah blah bullshit logic of people who want to make sure they keep their dollar and fuck everyone else.

Managers are supposed to pay you minimum wage if your tips fail to cover the difference, but this sometimes doesn't work in practice.

Some people aren't going to want to risk their job by demanding the difference be covered, because sometimes you just have a bad week or business was slow and you had bad shifts, when servers can actually make a good deal of money because of the tip system, so it can be worth it to zip your mouth and wait for the tips to start up again.

If you're demanding the difference be covered, then the boss may decide to say "Oh you want your money? Here it is, you're also fired because evidently you must be a horrible server if you can't get enough tips to make up the difference."

The problem is for waiters, waitresses and servers is that customers unfairly penalize them for mistakes or short staffing in the kitchen. Or mismanagement has driven customers away and the lowball the prices on the menu.

You might need two hammers or a hammer and an anvil.
