Hearthstone

I've been watching a bunch of vids on this recently and normally I'm not a big card fan but I can't help but be addicted to it's matches and gameplay.

There is a rather anti-climatic feeling to checking in to your battle.net connection, checking the "interested in beta" checkbox for Hearthstone and then have nothing happen. I forget how I got into the Starcraft II beta, but it was more tangible, something to do.

I know the feeling but one guy I've been watching says they've not even considered releasing EU beta client just yet, or at least it may be a few weeks.

Even so having watched quite a few vids I feel I could create a pretty sweet Paladin deck.

This is a whole new cow that's an offspring of WoW but it's pretty damn good, hell I'd even pump the odd tenner into few packs of cards every now and again.

This is quite hilarious.

Oh yeah I laughed so much when his powerful card was taken off him and then used against him, between TB who gives nice rundown for Arena and Crendor who gives great play by play info I feel I've learnt this game just from watching and listening and feel sorry for Jesse who's just flailing slightly even having grasped it but making stupid play and not taking risks or using up moves.

Edit: Found the moment, go to 28 minutes for build up to a great game switch.

Man I really want a beta key for this game myself. I love TCGs and this one seems pretty interesting with the specific class type decks being made.

Hearthstone doesn't work for me. I start it up and click the button but the box just spins endlessly.

I managed to get into the Beta after months and months and .. completely forgetting about it for another month. Google Mail had decided to put it in a new tab called "promotions" instead of the tab I get all my other mail in.

Regardless! While it is quite fun, it isn't as fun as I was hoping it was.

After years of buying Blizzard products I still haven't quite learned the most important rule : Blizzard can make anything look amazing in a trailer, even if it's kinda generic.

Still, beta is beta and there are some bugs to iron out before official release and the game certainly has potential.

So I now have my beta too, and I find it as enjoyable to play as it is to watch, possibly even more so. I also realise now that when I ponder, I subconsciously put my hands into some form of Mr. Burns pose.

Got into the beta yesterday, finally. Fun as heck, but... I'm getting stomped. xD It feels like a pay to win kind of game but eh, we'll see.

I was going to sign up for the European beta, but then I decided I don't have enough free time to let myself get drowned in another addicting game. Lest my grades suffer too much.

So I'm putting it off until it actually comes out.

I'm in. It's pretty fun. The best piece of the game design, I think, is the way minions battling works. That they lose health permanently and you can choose who you attack, mostly. Comparing to Magic: the Gathering, here. There's some very interesting trade-offs between fighting minions versus dealing damage to the hero, which means you're always making tactical decisions, even if you're playing a very simple deck. Even if you only play no special effects minions and you have no card in hand, you still have to make interesting choices. There's still that niggling "if I attack him, I can win next turn... If I don't kill his minion though, he might have a card that allows him to kill ME on his turn... Hmmmmmm...".

It's not in any revolutionary in any way though. I can name like 4 ways it's significantly different from Magic. Other than that, meh. It's not different, it's just better. Of course, that'd also be silly to expect from Blizzard. They don't innovate, they just repurpose others ideas and make really strong design.
