I think you're going the right direction with them. They seem to have a lot of personality and chemistry as side by side characters. I think you're doing just fine.

I personally like the idea of them not getting along at first, it's more realistic, they just seem like two people that should never be friends. Which makes for a good story.

Thank you so much! And I know, it can take some time, but I'm just impatient ;p

So, thumbs up on the antagonism then. And yes, i think i definitely want them as opposite as they can possibly get.

Morpheus wrote:I love these characters.
The backstory you've given them is fantastic.
The look in the first set of sketches of rabbit is amazing.
Especially the in the top right corner and Halloween costume.
With coyote I can't decide which way I like him the best his but I the sketches where he looks more out of control.
And the last two drawings are just amazing.

Thank you as always luv, you really are the best. I think i agree, by far the best sketch of rabbit is that upper right corner and it sounds like the more wild coyote gets the better, yes? Next thing I need to determine for Coyote (apart from name) is his powers. I'm hoping that might help me clue in on some of his look. Any thoughts as to what a poltergeist might be capable off (apart from just moving things)?

Being able to appear and disappear at will is pretty standard.
Maybe illusions and flight.
And yes I think he looks better wild.
But don't throw away his civil look just yet.
It'll be a great look to show how he was when he was living.

yes, yes and yes. good ghostly skills all i think. I've been doing a bit of research into some shamanic and hoodoo mythology and its got me playing around with coyote as a kind of shadow demon.

Work in progress. Older Rabbit (age 17/18 perhaps?) and Coyote. Seriously, I hate hands.

I know you can't tell in the rough sketch, but he's popping out of a mirror. Evidently mirrors are something to avoid when you are dealing with the dead. Heck, when anything otherworldly is involved! Has this kid never read through the looking glass?

Wow, this is fantastic Gigi.
The face on Rabbit is almost Disneyish in the way it's designed.
And don't worry, I think everyone has that same level of hate you have for hands.

A few name ideas:
Coyote- Bill, Jaster, Kane, Umber, Marin

Rabbit- Emily, Lilli, Patricia, Luna, Lulu, Fera, Jocine

It is too late right now for me to properly expound on how awesome your art is. :( I will say I prefer Rabbit with some shadow around her eyes, like in the Halloween sketch. It fits her being dead(ish) and her generally morbid circumstances. I also like Coyote's hair being all messy, as in the latest picture.

Edit:
Now that I am more lucid, maybe I can do you justice. When I first entered this thread, I found your drawings excellent and not deserving of your timorous introduction. Then I skipped to your current work. Wow, is it superb. For what movie is this concept art? Our tastes are similar as well. Cute ghost girl connives and grows up with an unscrupulous poltergeist? Love it. Please continue; be it in comics or sketches, traditional, digital, or literary.

Gushing aside, my only critique is that, yes, your hands do not compare with the rest of your work. Still, there is plenty of help on that dastardly topic, and improving should not be difficult for you given your skill. Maybe you could ask Varspool; he seems unnaturally good at hands.

For the record, my favorite names out of my suggestions are Jaster or Kane and Patricia or Lulu. Whatever you choose though, they should definitely call each other Coyote and Rabbit. I could even see those being their primary names, though that might not make sense in-universe. They might, for example, refuse to tell each other their real names at first and continue to use the nicknames even when they eventually confide in each other.

holy hell your right! I'm not sure if that's a step up of down, but i'll take it :D especially if that means I can finally learn hands (always loved Disney hands...ok that just sounded weird somehow).

wow...just, just all kinds of wow.

first and foremost, you are far to kind. thank you so much <3

and wow... so 24 hours before i posted this was the first time a name appeared in my research journal. check this out- i kid you not...

Image

When i saw your post i just about flipped out. so, evidently i'm starting to think there is something to this 'Emily'. Coyote is a bit different- though Kane has a nice ring to it. I really am starting to think he might not even have a name (possibly as part of his punishment? curse? don't know yet). I really like the idea that they both call each other by these nick names!

anyroad let me back up a tic and say i don't know what this is just yet. It might be a comic or a book, still undecided. but so far i really like where its starting and i want to keep it developing. especially whatever it is their relationship turns out to be.

thank you so much for such awesome feedback. <3

and ps-I am soooo in agreement on the eye shadow on Rabbit. though to be fair, shes not wholly dead...though equally not fully alive (still workin' on that too). and probably even more gross-ness on Coyote as well.

I love the design of the clothing here.
The boots on coyote feel right.

hahahahaha!!! oh yes, particularly the part you just know is coming next when she gets unceremoniously dumped on the floor.

I love those boots! they were one of those rare mistakes that turned out awesome-r then expected!

and speaking of clothing, i might as well through this up too and see what people think. I've been playing around with Rabbit's 'other world' costume. its a work in progress but for the most part you have here Rabbit's once great (now obliterated) Halloween costume on the left. in the middle is the coat once warn to summon Coyote back to earth (obviously way too big for her), and the third is the coat after Rabbit made some slight alterations to it to make it fit (and just about put coyote through the roof i imagine. I don't really see him being one who likes to share)

anyroad, cheers once again luv. always appreciate for the feedback!

Good as always Gigi.
I'm really loving the costume designs; especially the one on the right.
As far as nudity goes this was tasteful.
But if you want to post any more in the thread you can just put a NSFW tag on the thread and it'll be safe to post.
Also, I just noticed Coyote's hair looks completely wild.
I love it.

"Just call me Coyote."
"And you have to stop calling me kid."
"What then?"
[pause]
"You said I was 'your rabbit'. Call me that."
"Rabbit it is." [Coyote grins maliciously]
[pause]
"You're not going to eat me; are you?"

The hands in your last few sketches look better. The rest is excellent as always, especially the cloth. What happened to Rabbit's lovely costume?

Making a research journal is a good idea. I might try that. Am I right to assume that it is in a computer application? The girls in the photos look like Anne Frank. :D

For her name, I think Emily and its meanings fit Rabbit well, but it might be too common. Realizing that I am replacing my own suggestion - what about Amelia, which has the same etymology and happens to reference a well-known female pilot who vanished?

Gigi wrote:I really am starting to think he might not even have a name (possibly as part of his punishment? curse? don't know yet)
Maybe the circumstances of his death or curse or such caused him to lose many of his previous memories. Retrieving them (or avoiding them) could be part of his motivation.

Gigi wrote:the third is the coat after Rabbit made some slight alterations to it to make it fit (and just about put coyote through the roof i imagine. I don't really see him being one who likes to share)
And Rabbit knows he will not do anything about it because he needs her! lol So cute.

I'm curious about Coyote's personality, though. I assume Rabbit loses her parents somewhere in the story. If that is the case, I can see her treating Coyote like a parental figure, but how does he feel about it? Does he eventually grow attached to her?

Which brings me, hesitantly, to the latest drawing. Is... is that Rabbit? If so, I did not expect them to have that sort of relationship. On the other hand, the picture made me think that Coyote might be haunted by some relationship from his past.

Sorry if I am suggesting too much, feel free to disregard anything I say.

thank you thank you thank you <3 I'm having a ball drawing these and i can't tell you how importent the feedback has been.

You know, i wasn't 100% on the third outfit, but hell if it hasn't grown on me! I haven't quite decided, but i get the impression that the coat has a few supernatural tricks of its own (endless pockets for one).

and what can i say, you were right on money with the hair.

oh and ps- thank you for letting me know about the NSFW standing. like i said i don't want to get the thread or anyone in trouble at work, so its nice to know where the line is. Most places i've worked are pretty liberal about such things (i work with artists, so short of flat out porn, it would be hard to find something truly NSFW)

as always, your the best!!

Oh...my...god...
OH MY GOD!!!

When did this happen and how did i not know about this!! Holy hell your right!!! Seriously, how did i not know!! Coyote looks exactly like him! what the hell!! its both awesome and slightly unsettling at the same time (though totally a complement, let me put that out there right now!) But yes, that is so the right wavelength.

thank you for the heads up luv, and <3 for the comment.

And last, but certainly not least Etherian.

Taking them out of order a bit here, but I wanted to start by saying no, this is definitely not too much feed back. I can not possibly get too much feedback, because its the feedback that lets me know whats working and helps me find new ideas so your post just made my night and then some. thank you so much for taking the time to really get so detailed. I appreciate it more then i can say.

Definitely trying to up my game when it comes to hands, glad its at least somewhat coming through. (hands.....grrrrrr....).AS to Rabbits costume- well, it wasn't really meant for a life of bad ass-ness, so i always figured it probably took quite a beating in her first near death experience and just unravels from there.

I got the idea of the research journal from some writing friends of mine. its a great tool to help compile all my early thoughts, questions, and images to help me figure out what i know and what i still need to work on. the pictures are actually kid pictures of one Audrey Hepburn. Its part of an exercise another writer gave me in which you 'cast' your main characters in order to help you visualize them better- its a fun experiment and a great early springboard, even if the actual character design changes as you continue developing.

I'm still not 100% on the name, but I wont lie there's something kind of poetically juicy in the name Emily. see, thus far many of the characters are named after famous poets, artists, and philosophers who dealt with death and the macabre. for example, Rabbits mom is called Mary after Mary Shelley. Somehow it seems fitting that Emily Dickinson (a personal favorite of mine) be among the writers used. but again, i'm still sleeping on it.

concerning Coyote's memories...I like it. I like it alot! I like the idea that he is running from his past, especially if there are parts he needs for his master plan (whatever that is) to work. I haven't put much thought into his death just yet. I do know it was violent (since a violent death is what usually brings a poltergeist into existence), and that is was probably at least somewhat undeserved (though he probably was far from undeserving. like i've said hes not a nice guy, alive or dead). oh, and it happened in the year 1577. there are lots of little tidbits in my research and for some reason that date has popped up on four different occasions. so i figure he either died that year, or at the very least that's the year he made the pact with Baron Samedi.

Come to think about it, Coyote has a lot of missing peaces still. Its an excellent point to bring up. Hmmm... lets see. I suppose on the whole Tricksters, though they do have children in many mythologies, are not always the best parents. there lone wolf types, often sexual, crass, and love to upturn anything remotely ordinary. they are the doorkeepers and the instigators. So far i get the impression that Coyote is, if anything less mature then Rabbit. Its the kind of relationship here opposites attract. you know where Coyote (having to tact) says something incredibly offensive and Rabbit (shy but immune/ignorant of his powers) launches her shoe into his face.

Rabbit does have a father, and though he is loving, he's not exactly very attentive (professor type- good with books, not with kids). Her mother died a year before the story starts. I guess more then a parent hes kind of a 'partner in crime'. Drags her in and out of trouble. I don't know- still a bit hazy there. I just figure it kind of grows from a reluctant alliance for mutual gain to a legitimate friendship, at most a big brother kind of thing.

and yeah...last picture...thingy...

I don't know man, it didn't start that way, but it just kind of ended up like that. Yes, technically its Rabbit and I'm not sure if its 'cannon', but it did get me thinking- I mean technically Rabbit is not truly dead (shes living on borrowed time thanks to her encounter with Coyote, half in the grave and half out) so shes going to grow up. that doesn't mean it ever turns intimate or anything (that may need to be filed away under the wait and see category), but i definitely think it might play with Coyote's head a little bit. For a womanizing jerk like him, its got to be quite a paradigm shift to realize that your best friend ain't a little girl any more. In fact the minute i read your post I totally had a scene flash in my head of the first time it hits the man (like a ton of bricks) and he just don't know what to do about it because 'hell...that's Rabbit...what the hell...there are so many many things wrong right now because that's Rabbit'.

And on another side note, yes, I think Coyote has some pretty unpleasant memory's from the 1700's in New Orleans, but I'm still working on a few more details before i post those pictures. your just a few steps a head of me ;)

but anyroad, that you for so many many many MANY helpful thoughts and questions. I cant thank you enough

New character alert! This is Martha Moirai- she is the oldest of the three fates, a complete hard ass, and she can make your afterlife a living hell if it suits her mood. She's always irritable, but few beings get under her skin quite like Coyote.

Thought?

Hahahaha!! Oh wow, you know what? I need to go back and check some of those old Disney movies because evidently they just keep sneaking into this series. I would never have thought of that, but I completely see the resemblance.

And ps, I so went and looked up more about that beauty and the beast episode. Apart from the voice it's just about dead on.

Thanks a million luv!

I love these sketches; especially the top left coyote.
The emotions you're getting with him are amazing as well.
Also, think the idea of an very old being modernizing as time goes on very interesting.

I think that's my favorite too. And I'm thrilled to think that Martha's modern tint might actually work. Thanks for the feed back xx

Ok, I'm not supposed to be online this week, but I'm cheating and slipping on quick like to through a new coyote/rabbit pick your way (incase your not sick of them yet?)

While I can't say I completely love Coyote's face in this one I adore the expression he's giving.
I really see the Disney peak through in rabbit this time. Although I don't know how I fell about the buck teeth. As always the clothing is very nice as well.
Amazing work Gigi.
