Yeah, that's probably it. I can relate to that archetype in real life.
Well, the one thing I've learned browsing fan-art of Naruto on Pixiv, is that the most popular pairing in Japan (for Hinata) is Neji-Hinata.
That's very interesting. Incest is wincest, I suppose.
So once I saw him die and Naruto and Hinata holding hands almost immediately after, I thought this'd free the story of the shipping nonsense, while keeping Japanese readers happy (since "heroic deaths" for well liked characters, are a cool thing there).
Sadly I was wrong about it finally ending, but if Neji stays dead and Sasuke stays "good" (that one seems almost certain) and alive, then I'd say chances of you seeing Naruto and Hinata hooked-up are rather high.
No matter what happens in the story, shipping will always exist. Even if the story ends. Shippers are crazy like that.
To be fair, Sasuke has never really shown any interest in Sakura. The most emotion he's ever showed her was when he "thanked" her after he left the village back in the original series. Just because he's a good guy doesn't mean he'll want to bang Sakura. He's much closer to Karin than he is Sakura (but saying that is also kind of a stretch).
Now wouldn't that be interesting? Uchiha and Uzumaki blood mingling together! Ha!
If not, Kishimoto will likely leave it open-ended and then some anime spin-off in the vain of Dragon Ball GT, which I expect will happen, will have them together, since the anime staff is totally into Naruto-Hinata.
Naruto GT! "And when you couldn't think it could get any worse!"
