Vague Instructions for project?

Postby True Order » Thu May 02, 2013 12:03 pm

Abuse the SHIT out of them.

For my Intro to Information Processing our final project is to make a Power point presentation, on any topic.

I confirmed the vagueness with the Professor and he says anything is allowed as long as it is "school appropriate."

As bad as final projects get, this is really awesome. The power of random freedom to be freely random and redundant!

I'm gonna choose a topic that is either fun, simple or ironic.

Something like: Bioshock Infinite, Cheesecake, Hypocrites, Procrastination or power points (yes a power point on power points.) You got a better idea?

I've done projects like this before with some really random topic choices, like "The color Orange," "Frosting and how," "The evil of Daffodils," "belief + action = latent strength," "Early attempts at flying machines," "Crystal formations," "How to be Random," "Are you still reading these?," and "Why darkness is associated with evil."
The things I could teach the world about randomocity.

Have you ever done a project with vague topic requirements? What topic did you choose? Gimme details. If you please.

I only just realized your avatar is SCP-173

As for a subject, pick something science-y and fun! I'd recommend watching the Vsauce channel on Youtube for inspiration (or use it as a reference).
Stuff like, what would happen if the sun were to suddenly disappear?
Why do we kiss?
Or, what is the conscious mind?

Its a fun channel [/shameless plugin]

I once did one on the Prince Rupert's drop. I only wish I was allowed to bring one to show how it works, but apparently, pieces of glass flying everywhere is a "safety hazard".

Clever.

Is it just me or do most people not take advantage of these kinds of projects? I mean it can actually be fun for once, but NOPE most peeps pick something generic. Or at least around here they do. I swear if I ever have to hear another presentation about corn I'm going to shoot myself and by that I mean I will likely make obnoxious yelping noises and leave the room. I fucking HATE corn.

Coooooool, though I can see why they thought it was a safety hazard, also I imagine it being very hard to clean up.

Nebraska or Kansas would be more apropos here, I think. Indiana is as nondescriptly in the center of the United States' major geographical features that it can be ascribed most climes but outright desert and mountain stuff, grain-growing included but not focused on like the Plains states.

If I recall correctly it even has a dinky coastline on one of the Great Lakes, separating Michigan from Ohio by a small amount.

I would say don't do anything meta or related to random. It's clever at first but it's really not. Some stuff like the color orange or early flying machines may provide serious enough material for your topic, most of the rest I wouldn't bother with. It's still a final so you should take it seriously, you're just given more room to be creative here. I would cringe if I saw someone give a powerpoint on procrastination, on powerpoints, or how to be random.

However if there's anything you have a particular knowledge in, like some geekdom or hobby, I would say go with that. Since you love it, that'll show in your knowledge and presentation of the material. For example, if you were a Star Trek fan, you could give a presentation on the effects Star Trek has had on modern society, ways of thought, and technological progress. If you were a Game of Thrones fan, you might delve into an analysis of how the book/show are reflections of society (beware spoilers though). You could do a presentation on the political philosophies and themes espoused throughout the Bioshock games If you do it with something you know and love, the project will be easier to do and your presentation will be better. It's win-win.

^ this

Do something you're already passionate about, you'll learn some new thing, but already know a bunch about it so you can really hit it out of the park.

I remember when in social studies when we could do a report on anything we were passionate about and I hit this report about the civilizations in Middle-Earth out of the park

Hitting things out of the park and potentially damaging someone's car with little to no consequences does sound like a really good idea.

This idea is a wise one, I shall consider some topic of which I am passionate about.

....How to be random was on my list of topics I've done before.

Now that I think about it, it was more on how to think randomly as opposed to being.
Most seemed to like it and I got a B. This was in like 4th or 3rd grade btw....

Time may have passed but that does not mean the power of random creativity is not something still worth celebrating.

We rejoice in our power. For as we begin to hone and understand it we may become legends among mortals.

I might be over-exaggerating a bit but I still celebrate randomness and randomly celebrate.

Take your pick:

Synonyms of random: accidental, adventitious, aimless, arbitrary, casual, contingent, designless, desultory, driftless, fluky, fortuitous, hit-or-miss, incidental, indiscriminate, irregular, objectless, odd, promiscuous, purposeless, slapdash, spot, stray, unaimed, unconsidered, unplanned, unpremeditated.

Life would be boring without it.

fuck your mirriam-webster copy-paste job

you're using "random" in place of "ridiculous" in almost every context you use the word. it's been so overused its lost its original meaning. if something is random is is completely unaffected by any circumstances. it is the roll of a die, where every side has an equal chance of landing in any position. it is "a random sampling of 100 applicants." it is completely by chance.

tell me how half those words you listed mean the same as "random" in the literary definition of the word.

"promiscuous?" "fortuitous?"

all i'm asking you do, true, is learn the difference between "random" and "absurd"

Gotcha.

I guess I half-expected someone to get annoyed by my obvious overuse of the word.

Ya that was indeed a half-assed copy paste and I was thinking the same thing while posting but didn't really care to edit it. Also that list from Thesaurus.com
