I'm told otherwise. My uncle who was living there before being deported back since he couldn't live there while waiting for his dual citizenship (leaving his wife and kids behind) said the average wage was 6 pounds, about a dollar more than our own minimum wage, yet living expenses are close to double what it is in the states.
