I remember hating watching other people play when I was a kid. I still feel that way, it's why I can never watch a let's play.
I could be playing instead of watching someone else do it.

The only Lets Play I truly watched, was one for Journey, since I'd never play that game myself. I'm eternally thankful that there was no commentary with it.

In general, for a let's play to be succesful it's better if there's more than just one person playing, and a good dose of charisma helps a lot. I've seen so many let's play done by insecure people who don't speak out due to fear of saying something unfunny, and even when they do, they execute the joke so poorly due to nervousness that the funny is lost.

So, either have a bunch of charisma, play with friends, or both while doing a let's play.

I always wanted to do one of these myself at least once, but don't have the slightest idea on how to start. Like what sort of software/hardware I'd need, how to edit videos, etc.

I know WB and ND make their own, so they're good to ask for tips... hmm...

it's not really that hard at all. the editing takes a lot of practice, but other than that it's just getting used to the idea of talking while playing games. i've seen a lot of videos where people just kind of shut down and go into that game-state where you clam up and focus and that doesn't make for very interesting watching. making LPs, and being successful at building a following, is actually pretty difficult because you need to be ON constantly and you need to be constantly entertaining, whether it be with your jokes or the gameplay or what-have-you.

but, again, that just comes with time and practice.

just don't do Minecraft. the scene is over-saturated with that shit and it's so unfunny and disinteresting.

you also can't go into it hoping to make a career out of it. that, in itself, just makes you stiff and uninteresting. only do it if you enjoy it, really. try it for a while and if you like doing it, hey, stick to it, but if you don't really like it, don't force it for the sake of being famous.

What do you use when you record sessions, WB? I'd like to give at least one game a Let's Play. I forgot which, but I know one of the games I have I could never find an LP for...

FRAPS is a pretty much the standard, though there are better. It records at good quality (which means the file sizes will be huge and the files will require converting). Could torrent it. It's fairly small.

For converting, I use Handbrake, and for editing, I use Powerdirector 11, just because I know you'll ask eventually.

Yet how do people record console games using it? I'm just so uneducated about how recording works <_<

People don't record console games with FRAPS. They either use a capture card or, if their TV can do it, they just hook up an external hard drive to it and record directly from it.

I record my BO2 plays with friends because black ops comes with that specific feature, as does ultimate tenkiachi
