WD40 would lubricate your gears. Dirt and rust would be the result of grinding; grinding would generally be caused by friction due to bearing a load. Your gears also would probably be different sizes; one of those gears is going to be ground a little harder than the other.

OH WAIT YOU'RE BEING IRONIC HAHAHA IT'S FUNNY! QUESTION MARK?

I'm thinking that Slowbro image was directed at me?

I'm beginning to think that my humor is just too dry to understand that I knew he wasn't serious about the WD40 and was simply poking fun @ him.

How does one moisten their humor? Would be good to know.

Marinades and lubricants are not mutually exclusive by necessity. Also: what metaphorical marinade do you go to first on average, in a situation where you're trying to be funny?

If your gears are grinding with WD40, clean them and switch to a heavier lubricant, like chain oil, grease, or a specialized high-pressure lube, depending on the loads involved.

Valhallen, what's your favorite specialized high-pressure lube? *starry-eyed with palms on chin*

@Valhallen: Alcohol is good, but I like to keep my senses about me and not trip over a nomally-obvious object, such as my cat. Still, if I am trying to be funny, alcohol makes a good temporary buffer.

The high-pressure lubricant I use most often is a sulfurized cutting oil. But since that's for cutting, and I don't have any experience with gears that need lubrication at tens of thousands of psi, I can't really comment from experience on what would be appropriate for gears.

I'm partial 80w-90 or lithium grease.

You know what really grinds my gears? When I'm speed shifting in my car, and I pop the clutch just a millisecond too early so the whole think go "BRRRZT" and I'm like "OH GOD SORRY CAR I DIDN'T MEAN TO."
