So bending is passed through heritage, but what about other people later learning bending again?

According to toph she learned bending from beaver moles or whatever they were, thus what Amon did was stupid because if anyone with the heritage and spiritual aptitude was curious enough to go back to the source they would learn how to bend, like 'oh hey mom you were an earth bender so was dad, where did it come from?'

Amon didn't take away anyone's knowledge of bending, Amon blocked their chi in a very vital spot. Chi is necessary for bending. Without that shit you can't bend even if you know how. So no, you cannot simply "go back to bending school". ADditionally, you cannot simply learn it, you're either born one type of bender, or as a non bender. If learning to bend was that easy there would be no non benders, and there would be millions of avatars.

Also, badger moles.

I think he means, like their children, if Amon had won. He'd wipe out all current benders (eventually, it'd take some long lines lol), but the children would be born without the chi block presumably, and therefore it'd just be learned again.

All babies would be blocked instead of butt smacked when born.

All of them? Considering the only one who could do it was Amon, and given the size of the world and the population therein, I think his whole plan was pretty much nuts to begin with.

you missed that part mirak

like neo said, eventually kids who had the ability to, WOULD bend you can't stop it so why bother? eventually resistances would be formed amon would be overthrown by the oppressed benders , arnold swartzennager goes back in time to kill sarah conner, yadda yadda yadda

@Neo: he wanted to rid republic city of benders not the world, he was hitler and in a way the benders were jews

in a way if you look at the times it sorta looked a bit like WW2 in that last episode

Animals and spirits taught people to bend. What I want to know exactly is how bending is passed/learned because the first human benders were taught by said animals and spirits. Does it become a genetic trait somehow? Is it spiritual? I need the answers!

That would mean bending is genetic... So did people mate with the original bending animals? I think it's spiritual.

I don't understand heritage then.

EDIT: Ok I read up on it. Bending is a cultural heritage.

Some people are born benders, most are not. Those who are not can learn to bend through spiritual practices. If you haven't learned to bend by puberty, it's unlikely or maybe impossible you'll ever learn it. Your element is in your DNA, like the color of your eyes or skin. Even non-benders have it in them, for example one of Toph's parents could have learned Earthbending if they were so inclined as a child. I suspect the practices involved in becoming a bender of your own volition however is difficult enough that a child is unlikely to succeed on their own, thus it takes a society like the Air Nomads - who had absolutely no non-benders - to guide them.

From the looks of it it's a little bit of both spiritual and genetics. Obviously it's not fully spiritual (It's a bit of an understatement) or else everybody would be able to be like the Avatar.

From what I can understand from the Lion Turtle's little speech, all 4 tribes seem to share the same ancestors; he said that people originally bent energy instead of just one element. My theory is that they simply grew more and more different (evolution and all that) and eventually settled with people who have more in common with each other and have similar bending abilities. Then energy bending was kinda lost to them, yadda yadda and they eventually discovered how to bend elements.

On bending it seems to just be whatever the writers want, but in general it's genetic. There were a pair of twins and one was a bender and the other not.

Also if Zuko is still alive I don't see why Azula can't be.

I really don't see someone living to the age of Zuko and Katara on the scraps of food prisoners would get.

Toph was younger than everyone else in team avatar, by far out of them all SHE would be most likely to still be around age wise

Azula wasn't in prison, she was in a mental health facility.

Calorie deprivation actually makes organisms live longer. As long as you aren't dying from it, you'll end up living longer.
