Today, the government took down megaupload, arrested its founders, and seized over 50 million dollars worth of the company's assets. The propriators of megaupload have been officially charged with racketeering, copyright infringement, and money laundering.
The Internet is now a measurably smaller place.

And MegaVideo was one of the better video players online, too.

No fucking way...
God damn you, America and your S.O.P.A! GOD DAMN YOU TO HELL!!!

The future is now bleak.

Quote:
"It begs the question that if you can find and arrest people who are suspected to be involved in piracy using existing laws, then why introduce further regulations which are US-only and potentially damaging."

Thoughts on this quote?

It was never about stopping piracy is the most obvious answer.

This kinda goes beyond just piracy and copyright infringement if those other charges are true. I have absolutely no idea about the legality of it, but doesn't the fact that megaupload at least makes some effort to take down videos clear them of copyright infringement? I mean, I doubt that they uploaded those videos themselves.

In an epic display of "probably doing to more harm than good," anonymous is going after the website of anyone involved in the takedown.

It looks like the majority of the charges are based on a creative interpretation of the megaupload rewards program combined with the premium user system.

Maybe I don't remember. It's been awhile since I've ever used MegaUpload. I've gotten accustomed to the use of torrents.

I was aware of MegaUpload's other services though. I think they just hid that service from the underage audience. They did a damn good job If they did.

Why do you guys give a fuck? Megaupload is terrible and the internet is better with it gone. I mean seriously http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Schmitz the owner is a twat and this should have been expected.

Not for the reason it's going to be gone though.

This has NOTHING to do with SOPA at all. Megaupload has been the shadiest thing on the net a long time now and I have been personally waiting for this to happen.

Quote:
In 2001, Schmitz purchased $375,000 worth of shares of the nearly bankrupt company LetsBuyIt.com and subsequently announced his intention to invest EUR 50 million in the company.[13] Unknown to others, Schmitz did not have the funds available to invest, although the announcement caused the share value of LetsBuyIt.com to jump by nearly 300%.[14] Schmitz quickly sold the shares and profited $1.5 million as a result.[13]

Schmitz had also arranged and obtained an unsecured loan of EUR 280,000 from Monkey AG, a company for which Schmitz had served as Chairman of the Board. The funds were to be paid to Kimvestor AG. As a result, both Monkey and Kimvestor went bankrupt.[15]

In January 2002, Schmitz was arrested in Bangkok, Thailand, deported to Germany, and sentenced to a probationary sentence of one year and eight months, and a EUR 100,000 fine, the largest insider-trading case in Germany at the time.[16] Schmitz also pleaded guilty to embezzlement in November 2003 and received a two-year probation sentence.[17]

It has nothing to do with sopa? The way i see it, the whole "arrest" and shit is a butthurt response from the authorities towards the people's succesful opposition against the bills. It's their own way of saying "so what if the bill did not pass? Look at how much we can still shit on your face". That much is obvious. The arrest happening shortly after the day of protest is no coincidence. The owner of megaupload was a twat yes, and that is precisely why he was used as a wooden effigy to be burned in counter-protest to people "defending piracy". :/

Well, I guess that clears that up. This really has nothing to do with SOPA, the guy is just a straight-up con-man.

You're a dumbass, but you're not entirely without a point.

The actual arrest may not have much to do with SOPA, but the timing of the arrest likely does. Putting Kim up on that charge for copyright infringement is also probably a stab from the SOPA lobby because I don't think they can make it stick.

Either way, when it comes down to it, Kim probably did have his hand in some nasty shit and this is justice.

I imagine an operation like this took some time to plan. It might be entirely coincidence that it happened right now.
