It's more about mourning for your nation than for any specific death. The people who died in 9/11 were faceless thousands - you can care on an intellectual level but hardly an emotional one. It was basically the death of our then-identity of America, as Kim Jong Il was the identity of North Korea.

And people don't cry over how "worse" something is compared to another. People will cry over anything as long as the emotional attachment is there, but they can give less of a crap if there isn't one even if there's a big intellectual justification for it (like the stereotypical example of Africans).

Well okay then.

How about the death of Vaclav Havel? He was a great representation of the Czech Republic, a true national hero.

Castro has played nice. As far as I've heard, he just puts people in prison, doesn't mass murder them. And considering the size of Cuba, I don't think he really could...


So I looked it up. There is arbitrary killings, and massive state control, but even then, Cuba is starting to center. Fidel willingly let go of power to his brother, who has been more than willing to begin progressive movement in Cuba, if a bit slow.

Cuba actually does well on some metrics though, it's not just a craphole like Libya or North Korea. It's certainly not an ideal country however.

It's sort of a benevolent dictatorship except the guy is crazy but he's not being crazy in a selfish way like many other dictators.

Of course, the standard gets skewed here some because of how incredibly self-absorbed some people like Gaddafi were.

Castro is probably most crazy in his anti-American sentiments, then again, can you blame him after how many times we've tried to kill him?
