To be fair, that's what people who do hunger strikes are essentially choosing to do. Particularly the ones that stick it out, of course.

Pretty powerful since they're showing they actually mean business, not just running their mouths off.

There's something to be said about the fact that they willingly chose to do this.

I'm sure those people wouldn't be happy if their hunger strikes were imposed by the government or by circumstance. They'd be trying to eat. Often times, people only tolerate such things if they willingly put themselves to it. I get your point of course, but the vast majority of people are as Bob describes. It's never called a hunger strike when there isn't food to eat in the first place.

Uh, maybe you should reading comprehend.

I went to Singapore a few months ago and it's a lovely place with many many many laws with very very very harsh fines/punishment. It's a very socialist place where citizens enjoy free housing, health care, etc, and because there's a lot of free things people can enjoy spending their money on cool stuff, like sweet cars. I have never seen so many Ferraris, Porches, BMWs in one place in my life. People were happy and enjoyed a lot of good food and shopping. Still, they had a lot of complaints when it came to their sense of freedom. The people in Singapore actually resent all the restrictions the laws of their country impose; they can't stand not being able to do all the things that people from other countries can, especially when it comes to Americans.

It seems that once people have all the basic necessities covered, the next step is to want to do more; people get to a point where being content is not enough, where if you have the opportunity to do something, you should be able to do it, and anything less is will actually make life suck.

Freedom, in my opinion, is just the ability to find happiness on your own terms, which can be done whether you live under an oppressive regime or in some American ideal nation. Freedom can be found as long as you have a choice, any choice. That being said, happiness also depends, even more so, on the things you can do and buy, and I cannot think of any system that allows the opportunity to do and acquire the things you want more than a capitalist democracy.

Quick, everyone do what they want, as long as it isn't stupid! (Now I've bridged the theory with the application, aha)
