This thread is made for the discussion of art techniques, materials or art in general.
You are allowed to break into chat but try to stay on the topic of things art related.
If you have any questions come here.

I kinda feel like the role of an art talk thread is filled with the "welcome to the art forum" thread...................

We do have enough "general purpose" threads here, but I'm up for anything that shakes the rotten status quo. What about, instead of a purposeless thread that's regularly revived by clueless newbies, we start some discussions instead?

I'll start:

Photoshop, best arting program ever? True fax or true fax?

I've heard heard about so many that I guess it's up to preference.

That thread's purpose is to get away from art.

While it does have a good number of things that make it special, it has just as many downsides to it as well. To me, I see it as an amazing program for editing, whether it be drawings or photographs. The digital drawing aspect to it is good too, but it doesn't feel as refined as say, SAI or Corel.
If you really want to make the most out of digital art, I believe that you need a good amount of knowledge and skill using these three programs at once. Maybe more programs would help, but these three really are the most refined and optimal for their purpose.

Stickified with a Hana seal of approval. This type of discussion is something someone may find helpful, and is best separated from general discussion, I think.

As to the topic of Photoshop and the question of whether it's the best or not, I think that's highly subjective. We have an artist here on the forum that pulls off some really amazing things with MSPaint, so I don't think that Photoshop's level of functionality necessarily makes it a "better" tool.

I personally prefer Photoshop. I find its GUI to be intuitive, and that makes for a better workflow for me. Granted, I am not really that much of an artist. I dabble at drawing and digital coloring and inking. I work far more in the realm of 3D art and once used Photoshop heavily for postworking due to limitations in both my skill level and the render engine that I was using. Since switching to an unbiased render engine and getting some more experience under my belt, I rarely do ANY postwork anymore.

I do really adore Photoshop's batch actions for resizing and color-correcting my personal photos, though, especially as I am a fiber artist and seamstress and the only way to show my work to anyone not in my immediate presence is through photos.

I've tried Corel Paint, but it was only very, VERY briefly, so I don't really think that my comments on it have any weight at all, but for my 20 minutes of playing with it, I found the interface clunky and confusing. Honestly, though, I only spent 20 minutes with it and that is not enough time to learn much at all, especially not enough familiarity with the GUI to DO anything.

Booo, screw Photoshop! Illustrator ftw!

Also, Soul, that is a very silly question. There's hundreds of programs out there that you can use. A better question would be, what kind of art do you want to make. Pixel based, vector based. Or perhaps you want to go into photo manipulation.

Do you or have you used Autodesk Maya? Because I'm going into 2D-3D Animation, I learned some Maya in my vocational program back in high school.

Maya, 3DS Max.... eeeuhm, Blender? I'm not sure if that last one was a 3D creation program, but it does have something to do with 3D.

Both are good programs to use(I use them for what I do) but, yeah, there are hundreds of different programs for digital drawing or even painting like Xara or OpenCanvas.
And, yes, you need first find out what kind of art(and art style) do you want to make and choose the right program to do it.
When you find out, do your best and have fun with it(that is the most important thing).

About 3D design, I don't know enough about it. I will start to used this kind of program only next year.
But Maya and Blender are good programs for that(that's what I heard about).

Traditional AND digital.

But, for my art style, is best the digital art.

Yeah. I can't see a world without Ctrl + Z.

How those guys from 300 years ago could "delete" errors in their paintings?

Oh, and in digital art we don't have to wait weeks for ink to dry. :P

Some see things as Ctrl + Z as cheating in a way.
Like I can spend 20+ hours on rendering and if I accidentally dot the page the picture is ruined.
They see digital media ass a way of cutting corners.

Digital Media is just as hard as Traditional in a lot of aspects, people don't know that.

But it's alot easier to correct mistakes without scraping hours of work.
Galleries don't take kind to digital artist.
Whilst it's extremely hard to become a illustrator as a traditional artist.

Both have their pros and cons. It just depends on which you like better. I love the feel of pencil and paper, and most of my digital drawings start out as pencil sketches. But I think you need to start with traditional when you are first learning, only because in both digital and traditional pieces you need the basics. Being able to see colors properly, for example, is essential.

What about free art programmes that don't involve trial periods or torrenting or other illegal crap?

ATM I'm running GIMP (haven't touched it yet ofc due to still learning to artenate) and wonder if it's likely the best choice.

if you want a good art program without pirating then you already have it, GIMP. I hate GIMP tho. any really good art program is going to cost money.

I started out with GIMP, loved it, but quickly longed for more options. So I went with Photoshop, played with that for a few years and now I'm comfortably sitting in my brightly colored, tightly lined vector zone. Currently working more and more in Flash, animating is fun.

Paint.NET is another possibility, but you're probably better off with just GIMP
