Shark robot hasn't quite hit critical mass. It just needs a bit more before it can justify putting more people on the payroll. At this stage in business Dave is super busy and while he makes decent money he isn't rolling in fuck you money, it is just him being busy, In fact if your parents own a business this is likely the stage they are in. But if can bring a few more sites onto shark robot he can advance to a business model where he supports from an administrative and sales end and the high school kids or mexicans he has hired do most of the actual work. But for that he essentially needs one high sales website or a few lower sales websites.

They each have a monopoly on products, you can't buy topatoco or shark robot products anywhere else. And t-shirts have a reasonably high profit margin.

but topatoco has much better comics in its arsenal
dave may have vgcats and bleedman, but topatoco has overcompensating, dinosaur comics, questionable content, dr mcninja, pictures for sad children, kc green, ms paint adventures, white ninja, axe cop, smbc, dresden codak, little gamers, kate beaton, three panel soul, amazing super powers

i mean fuck topatoco is ballin with the webcomic names

Don't get me wrong topatoco is a bigger company and handles more business, but that doesn't mean that they are not in competition. Trader Joes is in competition with Walmart but they don't compete on a huge scale. The advantage of this business is people go to topatoco and shark robot from their respective comic sites so they don't have to advertise directly to the end user they just have to advertise to the prospective comics. They don't go to topatoco and find comics that way. Simply put dave has to offer the comics themselves a better deal to get them over. If Topataco is offering $3 a shirt commission to each of the comic sites. Dave comes in and offers $4 to try to get them over and make up on it with volume. Although Cafe Press is a better target because I hear they treat their clients like shit and offer them a super low per sale commission.
