My roommate was worrying about this last night. He said that PSN accounts had been deleted.

I can't check the youtube vid while I'm at work, but from the info i've read, the only attack has been DDOS'es using LOIC so no accounts should be deleted.

Damn, I think that's what I heard too. PSN doesn't seem to be safe right now.

I haven't been able to check mine. I only hooked it up last night to play a game briefly and having 6-7 people trying to access the Internet at one time causes it to not connect right away. Or even for two people.

sony.com is online, so that seems like a failure. I can emphasize with the cause, though.

It's probably all over by now. Eventually these people want to use their own internet connections after a long enough time I'm guessing... I'm not familiar with the load LOIC puts on a home internet connection. Plus Sony has the resources to mitigate this type of attack.

I don't know why anyone would be concerned about their PSN accounts. All Anonymous has done so far is clog up Sony's network, not actually hack into anything. If they have, then it's not public yet. The real thing to worry about is how secure is the password used with the email account associated with your PSN account. This goes for any online service, not just PSN. For example, if someone were to figure out my Gmail password they could then hijack my XBoxLive account, or worse my Snafu account, very easily.

This video was posted yesterday, how could you say that it's over? Sony has also been going into 'maintenance' due to the situation.

LOL that video was kinda lame. I thought it was going to be an actual report or something.

I think this will be over soon, if not already (I just logged into PSN at my house) becuase these types of attacks only last so long. 24hrs of DDOS traffic gets noticed by a lot of players other than Sony... Qwest, L3, Verizon, AT&T, none of those companies are going to allow their networks to be abused for too long. Granted their 10Gb+ connections in between the random Anonymous and Sony's gateways aren't going to slow much from this traffic, but they should atleast be aware of the sudden spike in traffic.

The worst that Anonymous can do is social engineer some login info for an account on Sony's corporate network. If they did that, given Anonymous' desire to market themselves as rebels with a cause, they would not start destructive hacking (deleting PSN accounts) until they pulled enough sensitive data off of Sony's network to further their goals. Then we would probably see another cheap youtube video exposing whatever info they found. Basically, what they did to HBGary Federal. Now THAT was the only effective thing I've ever seen come from Anonymous.

Here's a link to that story - http://krebsonsecurity.com/2011/02/hbgary-federal-hacked-by-anonymous/
Here's a better, 3 page article with more from Anonymous' POV - http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2011/02/anonymous-speaks-the-inside-story-of-the-hbgary-hack.ars

i didn't mean that you did something lame, i meant that this latest thing from Anonymous is lame compared to what I would expect from them at this point. I mean, wasn't the scientology one they did years ago better? I'm just going from memory :p

The Scientology thing was mostly for the Lulz. These days, they call themselves 'hacktivists' and are all serious and stuff.

I really only play Sengoku Basara and Fallout on the PS3 currently. So personally whatever happens to the PSN has no real effect on me.

For the record, would any of our downloaded material be affected by this?

Meh, not really impressed by all of this. They're other so called "acts of justice" I guess I could see, but this one is stupid. In sacrifice of practically 40 million people able to play online, they're hacking sony in Geohot and some other guy's name to "save" them.

I don't have a clue about the whole Geohot thing but sometimes people have to be inconvenienced to make them realize things aren't right with the world.
