My recent thread lead me to wonder about everyone's preferred and ill-preferred ones. I'm sure y'all have your tastes, but permit me to share.

I've always loved the classics. Strings, ivories.. you name it.
But that don't mean I don't like any of the more contemporary ones either, no sir. But my interest in them are sporadic. It could be from one instance to another.
But I guess the reason why I prefer the dusty ones is because I can safely recognize the mood that they give me. Be it nonchalantor melancholic.
But whatever the rhythm or beat. Old or new, it has to make me "feel" something. Anger, Peace, Despair, even Love

So what does your mirror look like, fellow forumer?

My mirror has taken many shapes. Well not poetically speaking, I engage in listening to music from multiple categories. I find it rare for me to be able to listen to the classics unless it seems to be something quite uncommon, which makes Vivaldi a wonderful choice for having such unique compositions.

As for other music...I listen to Hip-Hop because it indulges my sense of awareness around the planet, thus creating my own ideology of life itself, which varies in many ways that I've yet to understand. Rock is like an energy drink pumping you up for some action, and all the Funk and Soul I listen to makes me feel alive so I wouldn't feel so hollow in the inside. Sometimes, a mix of a few categories can make you feel like...a superior being.

It's interesting just thinking about how we see and think of things with the astonishing melodies created through the music that humans can create in their lifetime.

8-bit Rock is still Rock, right? 'Cause I'm listening to Anamaguchi's songs recently. Nostalgia never hits this hard.

I listen to Techno for the shear idea that everything is awesome whenever I listen to it. It gives me energy, it makes me focus. Fatigue gets brushed off and a new vigor courses through me, making me work harder, better, faster, stronger. More than an hour of work is never over.

i try to stay pretty open minded for music. i'll listen to a lot of things casually and have a pretty vast music collection, so i'll only really talk about the few things i'll find myself listening to daily
my favourite band is probably the beatles
but i mainly listen to hip hop and jazz, but there's other genres in there
miles davis, nas, the notorious b.i.g., nick drake, cannonball adderly, tom waits, bill evans, immortal technique, wu tang clan, john coltrane, portishead, johnny cash, david bowie, d'angelo

i used to listen to a lot of indie music so i could start listing them but i'd feel like i was lying because i haven't listened to it all in years, but i still can appreciate it when i re-indulge in the occasional album

You've got some variety there Grey. I find it important to stay open minded for music as well because you can't just listen to the same old thing or stay in the same category forever. That's why I also listen to, besides Nujabes or DJ Okawari, Blu-Swing (Jazz) or even bands that sounds juvenile like Mindless Self Indulgence (MSI because I needed something. They used to describe their music as ''Industrial Jungle Pussy Punk'.)

Depends on my mood.

Johnny Cash is something I like to listen to when I am feeling dark.
Some of the pop and rock that I listen to when I'm feeling pep.
Hard metal when I'm looking to be angry or productive.
Maybe some rap when I'm feeling gagsta.
And country when I'm feeling redneck.

Music reflects us in many cases rather than some. I found myself looking up lyrics sometime ago of the artists I listen to and discovered how much I could relate to the songs, and because we grow a liking to such songs, we end up favoring them because it reflects ourselves, hence the fact that music is the mirror.

Would we have changed without mirrors at all?

I think lumping American and English music as mainstream is an insult to the many bands and artists who never get exposed to the mainstream. Also, Thom Yorke's premonition is a crock of shit, it only works for a band who doesn't need the services of a label anymore and can afford to eat production costs and have a loyal fanbase that will promote for you.

I wouldn't say my musical preferences is a reflection of me, lyrics are honestly about the last thing I listen to in a song.

I've grown up associating myself to a lot of types of music at any one time. I don't feel that you should limit yourself due to mainstream associations. I'm not really a fan of The Beatles, they're not my thing, but I absolutely love one of their songs. Granted I don't associate myself with that type of mainstream media, but I love it none the less. In 50 years, Ke$ha will be a classic. It will be awful.
I grew up in a household that held Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline on the same pedestal as Jesus Christ. If Jesus couldn't save my soul, I'm sure my grandma thought the other two would catch it somewhere. I'd have hated to admit it in middle school and high school, but a deep part of me really connects with old school country classics. I can't hear "A Church, A Courtroom, then Goodbye," and not smile. When I was a little girl I wanted to be Dolly Parton, I thought she was the American version of a princess, much to my mother's horror.
In middle school I listened to a lot of hardcore, ska, and pop punk. Then in high school I started to truly appreciate some of the phenomenal lyricism of early hip hop and current artists like Mos Def. It would take a lot of time to explain the metamorphosis of my tastes, but it would take too long and too much back story. So, I'll list some of the music I've already talked about and a few more.

I'm constantly going through kicks with different bands (The Beatles, Placebo and Sufjan Stevens being the latest) but I'd have to say the number one band I keep going back to is The Smashing Pumpkins. I don't know what that says about me really.
