Mubarak is still in power, so they're still upset. He's sorta dodged the call, he said he would delegate some amount of power to Suleiman, but it's not clear how much.

Basically, we have to watch the generals and see what happens.

The Supreme Council of Armed forces has pledged to uphold the people's rights.

Another statement by the army is supposed to happen in a couple hours, according to Al Jazeera.

... Why is the army suddenly backing Mubarak now?

EDIT: Scratch that, Mubarak has stepped down and the army has taken over, apparently

More specifically Omar Suleiman will be the head-honcho from now. This increases chances of stabilization, but decreases chances of democratization.

If you would earn 80$ a month, with prices of products only about 4x times lower than those in Europe, you'd be pissed off, too.

I am not saying that the Egyptians do not have a legitimate beef. I am saying that the protesters already won. They are getting a new president in September and the next guy will almost assuredly listen to his people more.

But will the new person be a supporter of ours (US) or not? This is what my roommate is concerned with. Egypt is apparently our only support in the Arab world.

Omar Suleiman is probably the most pro-US guy in all of Egypt. US government is likely the force that pressed on most for him becoming the new leader.

So if he remains in power after this year, and the opposition in Egypt is weak and fractured at the moment, Egypt will likely become even more pro-US.

There's not much I can say, other than what I already have. His entire career proves he is very loyal to the US, almost frighteningly so. Your friends concerns are, in my opinion, unfounded.

Radical Egyptian religious groups, such as the Muslim Brotherhood, are what the US government should worry about, but those are currenntly far too weak to gain reign in Egypt.

Well except, the Saudis, the UAE, Jordan and Morocco (fun fact first country to acknowledge US sovereignty and one of the first to establish a bilateral treaty).

No religious groups support him, maybe the Copts slightly out of fear of Muslims, he's anti-islamic and is a supporter of secularization.

Saudis aren't really that much pro-US, their elites are split. Once King Abdullah dies they might turn anti-US depending on who succeeds.

Rival: Except we are their biggest customer. Also they think their neighbors are crazy.

On the Egypt front looks like everyone is going home. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-12445192

There seems to be a very big rash of censorship by middle eastern governments. First Iran now Eygpt, I wonder if these are the only incidents, or the only ones that have managed to get out before the governments locked down on the information flow...

but locking down information seams to have backfired and all the middle eastern nations are looking at egypt with concern.

Well except a few regimes where people are generally pleased.

So 60 Minutes reporter Lara Logan was gang-raped. No offense, ladies, but I'm not sure why they send women into places in a state like that to begin with.

Male journalists could just as easily get beaten to death.

At any rate, either would make for an interesting evening headline. (I am not joking; some news offices might feel this way.)

Turn might into most, move it forward by two words, and get rid of some... After that you'll be FAR more accurate with that sentience.

Anyways... *Drags self back onto topic* I'm just pissed the censorship. It's stupid and all it's going to do is let whatever the protestors are pissed about simmer until it boils over in the face of the Egyptian government and whoever else is close at hand at the moment. Same goes for Iran, that government is going to dig themselves into a grave eventually...
