I'm nearly therePerson’s History: Sam, as he doesn’t like being called Samuel, has somewhat of a strange history.
It all began with his mother Hannah and father Elkan. Hannah had been diagnosed barren and couldn’t bear children. This had been a strain on her as the only thing in life she really wanted was to have a child of her own. So she did the only thing she could think of and started praying to god for a miracle.
Whether it was a miracle or a faulty diagnosis we will never know, but subsequently Hannah got pregnant. Hannah couldn’t have been happier, her prayers had been heard. Elkan however was less pleased with this. They didn’t exactly had much in the way of money and a child would stretch their already stretched out budget even further.
Hannah had spent some time with her newfound religious side and couldn’t help but notice the eerie similarities between what happened to her and The Book of Samuel. Confident that the child would be a boy she decided to call it Samuel.
Birth came unexpected, at least three weeks too early. Hannah was rushed to the Sam was born was just fine, but Hannah had suffered heavy trauma and passed away. Elkan took the baby boy with him, but felt no love for him. He had taken away Hannah from him.
In memory of his lost wife Elkan named the boy Samuel and tried to continue life as it was. But Elkan was no father and the loss of his wife was heavy on him. He found faith in liquor and gambling.
Sam would’ve grown up as a loner if it wasn’t for Eli, his totem. Eli had quickly turned out to be the only thing in his life that showed any signs of love for the boy. Not having the money to send Sam to a school, he would spend most of his time exploring the town with Eli.
His father was soon so far in debt that they were evicted from the house. Saw was only 12 at the time. Elkan however had enough of it all. He left the boy behind and just vanished from Sam’s life. Sam wasn’t really bothered with it, he had gone through life without the help of that man and he would continue doing so.
And that is how Sam and Eli became a little street urchins. He would often do small jobs for shopkeepers who took pity in him, which raked in a petty penny. But the duo’s main way of survival was pickpocketing. Sam found that it was incredibly easy. They would scout for potential victims on the market. Sailors and tourists being their preferred target. Sam would bump into a victim and put on an act of innocence, so while Sam was distracting the victim Eli would quickly grab whatever he could fish out of the pockets. Most of the times they were in fact caught, but Sam and Eli knew the city well and would quickly lose the sailors and tourists through the winding alleyways.
During nights, right before bedtime, he can often be found on top of a higher building watching the stars with Eli. Sam dreamt of exploring the world. See new sights. Learn new things. But Eli would talk him out of it, traveling the world was dangerous and although life may not be perfect here, at least it was safe. Sam always kept on dreaming though and would most likely take the first opportunity to get out of this town he gets.
Personality Quirks:Sam is a quirky person. Even though life has been harsh to him ever since he was born, he would always greet it with a big smile. Despite his living condition, he’s still very childlike. But don’t let that mistake you into thinking Sam is in anyway dumb. While never having enjoyed a school life, Sam is very eager to learn new things and has a habit of remembering the weirdest little things.
Sam is a typical case of “The glass is half full”, being able to see the bright side in nearly any situation.
Clothing Style:Dirty, torn and ruffled are some words that would describe how Sam looks. Often found wearing simple shirts and some
3 quarter shorts. Sam wears whatever he finds, or whatever the kinder shopkeepers have to spare.
Sam has only two things in his life that he truly loves. One being Eli, the other being a pair of welding goggles. He was given these goggles by a sailor as a thank you for helping them load some crates on their ship. The sailor had told Sam that these were rocketeer goggles. Worn by people from the far east who had technology beyond Sam’s wildest imagination.
