Lightstarr is in South Korea

Postby LightStarr » Sun May 30, 2010 2:13 am

Hey Guys,

I landed here last Monday and I'm having a blast so far. Does anyone have any suggestions on places and things I should be doing? I'm living in Gunpo. I've been up Shu Li mountain (I think I have the spelling right here, probably not though) At any rate I've been up it and lord was the view spectacular. I'm down here teaching so the weekends are mine to have. I'm an outdoors-man and apparently for a foreigner that's odd; at the very least my co-workers think it's odd. I brought my PS3 along to keep myself from suffering the homesickness of missing my friends from New Brunswick, so if anyone wants to add me to the PSN send me a PM. Pictures to follow at a regular rate.

Image
Shu Li - I think, maybe? It's only been a week.

Image
Gunpo from the top. It took me about 45 minutes to get to the top and then I got lost.

Image
Sweaty me at the top.

Image
Sunset from one of the clearings I found.

Image
It's the full moon over Gunpo.

That looks awesome. You lucky bastard.

Do you speak Korean (I'd assume you'd have to, but I'm bad at this)? Is it anything like the crazy Japanese stories you always hear or is it more relaxed? I always imagined South Korea being a less pretentious Japan and more chilled China.

I don't speak Korean yet, but I'm slowly learning. The girls at work have been very helpful; in fact I'm helping one improve her English and she is going to help me with my Korean. I also have a book called "Culture Shock" that has been fairly helpful so far. Yea man, things seem pretty relaxed around here. Koreans come up to me and say "Hi" all the time when I'm out wandering around. The television has two channels that I swear are dedicated to showing nothing but Starcraft matches; shit you not. I bumped into one guy who works on the same floor as my school and he is going to show me around next weekend -- turns out he is the president of the company, so that should be a good weekend. The food, oh man the food, so good.

I assume you mean beyond, but I picked Korea because it's not Japan. I'm a country boy and I didn't feel like dumping myself in Japan. Plus I know a few friends of friends that are in different cities here. Also they love us Canucks here.

Yea I knew the game was big here; I just don't think I expected it to be this big. One of those friends of a friend is actually dating one of their 'pro' players.

Course the hardest part has been adjusting to the time difference. I'm not sure if I really have yet; sometimes I think my brain has but my body hasn't and then at other times it's the opposite.

Yeah starcraft is serious besiness in Korea.

Balljointed dolls are also really REALLY popural in Korea.

But they cost normally 300$ to 1000$ sometimes.

Also they are not made by Plastic or Porceline but by polyurethane resin (which has a more skin like feel albeit more breakable)
and use a complicated system of strings to make them fully moveable without falling or requiring a stand.

I could go on forever about this but i dont think your interested.

You would be correct sir! Now if you had said something about Nikon lenses, food, or outdoor styled adventures you would have perked my ears. Alas, I have no idea what you are really talking about but I can only assume Anime or some such thing.

Well, I dunno if "I'm a country boy" really fits into not visiting Japan, since Japan has tons of countryside tourism (granted, it's largely domestic, rather than international tourism). Similarly, if you were doing a teaching program in Japan (as I assume you are doing in Korea), there's probably a similarly equal chance of getting stuck in a middle-of-nowhere country town (after all, the demand for a place to send a kid to for another several hours of study after school is over, is universal in Japan's fairly strict educational system) as you did in Korea. Not to mention, Seoul's every bit as crazy as Tokyo, to be honest.

But I digress.

SK's a pretty cool place too, and it seems like you lucked out and landed in the kind of town you were looking for. I'm really enjoying some of the scenic photography. Asian food also rocks, all the time, so enjoy it while you can (hope you're not killing your wallet though).

Also, ask about their alphabet! It's actually quite a curious system they have going on there for that.

Hope you've already had some real Korean BBQ.

Go to a Starcraft game! The cameras like pointing out foreigners in the crowds. And as soon as you give them the thumbs up or make a silly face, they'll switch out right away because you're not hiding your face like you should.

I'm a Korean linguist and I can tell you that Korean ain't gonna be easy to master. I have actually only stayed in Seoul for a 5 week period, but am gonna be stationed there for 15 months next year. As for suggestions, I say schedule a DMZ tour, more hikes, take a flight down to Cheju. Check out the bathhouses, too, possibly on a weekend trip into Seoul where you can check out all the cool places.

I'm teaching English, clearly, as it was my major in University. So you're one of those yanks who wears my flag and travels? You know they suggest that we Canucks don't do that anymore because you guys keep doing it. So I've flipped you off for that. As to the bloody face; I had a small acne outbreak just before I left and I have to shave every day because young Korean men don't really wear beards it's more of a grandfather thing and while working with the kids I need to keep it gone. So I basically chopped my zits to bits.

Spooky bits, you can give your friend my email address if you want.

Yea Mo, the language is pretty tough, but I have the kids to help me and for the most part they aren't giving me words I shouldn't be using. I also have a 'cultureshock' book with the alphabet in it so I'm practicing, but yea it's tough.

So yea things are pretty solid here. I'm moving to a new apartment next week. Got an HD tv coming. I did a television interview last weekend. That was awkward as fuck. My friend is a documentary film maker and I was essentially told what to say. When he shows me what it turned out as I'll upload the nonsense to share.
