I am all for just taking any new computer getting all the drivers together and just formatting the computer. Laptops generally have their CDKeys on the bottom and so you just have to match versions of windows.

I got a HP "Orange Explosion" keyboard, a new microphone and a 8 GB pendrive cheap from China.
Life is sweet. :D

By the way, does anyone know how to get a microphone working properly for Counter-Strike?

If your mic is working with normal use (Ie: Sound Recorder) then it should just work by hitting "K" by default.

Edit: Oh, and there's like a 50% chance that 8GB USB Drive is actually 1GB drive made to appear as one in Windows.

Since I had an upgrade, whenever my laptop restarts for new updates, it starts this Windows Vista screensaver that is not connected with my desktop screensaver settings. It seems to only appear at the login screen. How do I disable this? It keeps my laptop running when I want it to sleep.

Just noticed your question.

Clarify: Do you mean after updates, when it restarts, it sits at the login screen and then plays the screensaver which means your PC won't sleep?

By any means it should sleep anyway, but you can always try turning off the screensaver entirely by:
regedit -> HKEY_USERS -> .DEFAULT -> Control Panel -> Desktop -> Make sure ScreenSaveActive is set to 0.

You run regedit in the run program. It's a windows program that lets you edit your computers registry keys. Though you may want to just try turning off your screen saver in your screen settings first if your worried about editing the registry manually.

The screensaver that comes on during the login is not the same as the one set for the desktop.

If XP:
Start -> Run -> regedit -> OK

If Vista/7:
Start -> type regedit -> Right-click -> Run as admin

Okay, I set it to 0, but what are the other settings for? Screensaver timeout and such?

Ignore it. They only matter if it's active.

Alright, thanks for the info.

Just out of curiosity, is it possible to tell if your pc is on the verge of crashing?

Verge of crashing, or verge of dying? Crashing is usually when it is really slow and then, well, crashes. So no.

Dying, yes.

What causes a crash? Too much shit running at once? My laptop has been slowing down. Actually, it fluctuates. The fan gets really anxious when running even simple programs.

Depends. For an OS crash, it is usually something not cleaning up after itself properly. Usually it is a 3rd party program, but back in the days before xp there was a good chance that it was the operating system itself. I remember windows 95 (shit I remember dos 5.0 but that was ages ago) and whenever that crashed it was almost certainly a windows API.

It's impossible to tell you what causes crashes over the internet. It could be your Windows install is fucked, or any piece of hardware (ANY piece) is dying. There's no real way without running tests.

So without further ado:

BurnInTest
Install and run it. It will tell you what is passing fine as well as how many errors certain subsystems are getting.

Alternatively, just get Hiren's and run GoldMem and SpinRite to find out if your RAM/HDD is fucked. I think it has PC-Check or whatever it's called, too, which will check your mobo. I'unno, it's never been useful to me.

I've used Sunbelt/Kerio Personal Firewall for a long time now, but as of yet they still don't have it Windows 7 compatible.

With the way I do things, my sort of spartan set up with Windows Firewall might be OK, but I am nonetheless wondering if you guys have any suggestions for another firewall I could use (that's free), which is similar to Sunbelt/Kerio in that it's really thorough and makes you click through tons of Allow/Deny prompts for almost every connection happening possible.

eerrr.... I am planning on buying a laptop this march and to tell the truth, I have no idea on what to pick and what is the best brand that will fit on my budget.

So far I only have a budget of 500 canadian dollars up my sleeve since that is the only I can come up. What are the best brands out there that will fit this allowance? Is it enough to buy a good laptop(in good, what I need is not that high-end yet dependable), or should I go for netbooks?

Thanks for the replies in advance.

Netbooks are ok if all you want is the internet, but they are cheap.

I personally prefer Toshiba as a laptop brand. I also like IBM too. I might go like this.

If your going to go low price I would probably go with Asus over Acer in terms of netbooks

I have a computer question for all of you.

I recently installed my official copy of Windows 7 and haven't had time to buy my student price MS office copy. So in the meantime I've installed the trial of the 2007 [I believe] Miicrosoft Office which lasts 2 months. For some reason my computer is not recognizing the .doc files, and it's not even listing MS Word as being the program to open them with. I used to have the 2003 version of Microsoft Word in my RC of windows 7 and transferred all the documents I did in there to my new windows.

So to summarize, can somebody explain to me why the .doc files are not being recognized? Do I have to download an external program?

.Docs should be being recognized try to open a .doc file through Office 2007 (File, open). If it opens it up just fine just tell windows to open all doc files with Office 2007.

I personally use Open Office and think more people should because it is free and works well.

I figured out the problem, but there is another. To be able to use the trial of MS Office, you need to register the program so the trial starts. Problem is that everytime I try to register it, the connection fails and it won't let me do it.... fucking Word.
