just start by following a few tutorials that teach you the basics, and then you're off!

I'm still trying to figure out how to continue with a pen path, after I deselected the path (i.e add new points to a existing path)
nobody here would happen to know this?

I've worked in Illustrator myself a bit,
but I've never done anything this good.
I can however, answer your question.
If you take the pen tool and hover it over the end of the path,
the x should change to a /.
When you get that slash click and you're free to continue on with the path.

I have to say that clouds are a little too bright against the background.

thank you, and white is a fickle color... go anywhere darker and it turns grey and kinda meh, turn down the opacity and you're left with weird looking glass in the sky. So I kept them white

On the clouds, I personally like the contrast that they offer, but you might use a slight gradient if you don't want them to be quite so bright.

I wanted to apply a gradient. But decided against it, because I wanted a stark contrast between black and white.
The only reason the sky is a gradient, is because it creates a depth effect

boat? oh no, they cant get off they're islands. And they hardly ever have contact with neighbors, perhaps once every year or so. And even then it's for very short, since the islands dont all move at the same speed.
Some have tried to break this tradition, by adding propulsion devices to their island. But sadly they forgot a way to steer, or even a way to stop. These individuals usually end up colliding with other islands. So the community (for as far as a community can develop in such a way) frown upon this.

Nobody really knows where these creatures come from, or even how they reproduce (if they even do that). Some speculate that they're actually immortal, children of the sky god. But this has never been proven, nor has anyone ever cared enough to do some actual research.
