Welcome to the Anime Thread!

This thread is dedicated to all things anime.
We're here to talk about anime, manga, visual novels, video games, movies, soundtracks, etc.

You know the basic rules, but mine include:
No spamming, this means staying on topic. Nothing but the things listed above may be talked about. (Unless I missed something.)
Nothing about Bleedman. Yes, his drawings are in the anime style but take it to the Bleedman forums.
No one worded posts, or any "Yes, I like it!" type posts. Contribute to the conversation or GTFO.
Be nice to each other, and no provoking fights.
    ABSOLUTELY NO SPOILERS!

Okay, we good? Cool.

I've heard about it and I've seen pictures, but haven't gotten into it yet. I plan to eventually, it looks neat.

I was at a bookstore and considered it, but then I decided against it, since I only had enough money to buy two, and I usually like to start a manga with at least three volumes, unless it's short. Anyways, for anyone who reads the Excel Saga manga, why are volumes 7 and 8 so much harder to find than the rest of the series? Even online...

I recommend that you start out with the visual novel where the series originated from.
It's more in depth to the story than the anime adaption.

I was going to. I couldn't with Higurashi and Umineko because nothing was really translated, but a lot of the battles were much better, and had more action in the visual novel.

Fate/stay night has a complete English patch.
I don't know about Higurashi and Umineko though.

I'm beginning to get curious about this franchise.
Maybe I'll check it out.
Any recommendations where to start?

Start with Higurashi, they're supposedly coming out with the games and novels this month. I haven't seen anything yet, so I don't know if it's true or not. But I know youtube has translated stuff floating around. Personally, I'd start with either the anime/manga/novels/etc. all of the Higurashi stuff is pretty much the same. Nothing completely major has been left out. But when you get to Umineko, go for the visual novels first. The anime has a few things left out.

I usually get started into an anime series either by accident, lurking, magazines, word of mouth, or television.

Same here, unless they show it on tv, in which case I will watch it if it seems interesting.

My first encounter of what I think is an otaku was just a couple of days ago at the nearby mall's arcade area.
The girl was playing some sort of Japanese version of a guitar hero looking arcade machine
along with some guy that I think is her boyfriend.
She had a double ponytail, wears black clothes, and a black Mokona backpack.
Unlike her the guy was pretty normal looking at first.
That is until they finally finished a round and turned around, revealing their faces.
The girl was wearing bright red contact lenses and the guy had 2 or 3 ring-like piercings on his lips.

So based on your statement, the situation here is quite the opposite.

Refering to people with obsessive interests, particularly anime, manga, and video games.

Almost like an obssesion? Like having wallpapers and posters in a room, along with cosplay and a whole room dedicated to it?

Yes, it's essentially an obsession, and based on a couple I know, it's usually devoted towards a particular series, though that may simply be them. You could also check Wikipedia for more answers.

My friend named her dog after Lacus Clyne from Mobile Suit Gundam Seed. Has anyone else seen that? Great anime with mechs, war and guns... and a lot of really good characters dying.

I seen it.
Sadly the version I have is in cantonese, so it's hard for me to understand.

Has anyone heard of an anime called "Transformers: Victory"?
