Weird question, and I'm probably looking too much into this for my own good, but its annoying me. I'm looking around to see if this "!?!" or something similar to it is a breaking of grammatical law.

So far, I've found the interrobang, which is this "!?" or this "?!". More of a modern usage/spin on grammar, but still trying to see if I get docked for using double punctuation like that and which form is better to use.

I'm trying to convey a character yelling out a question, and I'm probably not going to have dialogue tags on it.

I usually just do "?!", but if you want to do "!?!" then I don't see a problem with it. Something like that, IMO, usually just depends on a writer's personal preference.

Sigment's idea is solid. The ways I deal with it is to- instead of putting an Exclamation point in, just make the entire "question" in all caps.

I'm attempting to make an introductory narrative at the beginning of a fictional work sound upbeat and a tad condescending, but the tone constantly comes off flat and snobby.

Someone, please, help!!! :c

It is. Technically it's one terminal punctuation mark for a sentence. That's a rule in formal writing. Of course, if it's more casual writing, both an interrobang (‽) and even !?! can be used. It's a matter of suitability more so than of correctness. And for casual writing more a matter of personal preference. If you're writing a piece of literature, be it prose or poetry, you as the author pretty much have the right to write whatever you want. That includes creating words, and bending some grammatical rules, at least so long as it remains understandable to the reader.

If you're considering the !? or ?! issue, then:
The Corpus of Contemporary American English has 3742 examples of “?!” and 1197 examples of “!?”.

the British National Corpus, and it has 121 instances of “!?” and 224 instances of “?!”.

So, multiple punctuation mark endings are not as uncommon, but again, if you're writing a piece of typical formal writing, like an official letter, they are generally advised against.

I've seen a lot of people do that, and I've done something like that to accentuate volume, but never with a question mark. I'll keep it in consideration, but its the opening line of my new chapter for ER 250, and I don't want to blast everyone with text in the first 30 seconds.

Q.U. wrote:So, multiple punctuation mark endings are not as uncommon

Well, it'd be for creative writing. I've always seen people use the (!?!) way, but I guess I'm also looking for what is the most pleasant way to express a yelling question. I've thought that the interrobang thing would work, but I'm not completely sure on what to do.

Thanks for that information though, QU. It looks like quite a few people favor the (?!) method. I'll probably go with that in the end.

For some people, "!?!" implies more shock or anger than just "?!". IMO, Guard, if you wanna do it for ER250, I don't think anyone would judge you for it. Compared to that, uh... piece of "literature" that you were proofreading, it is not something someone should care about when reading your work.

To be fair, generally if the speaker expects an answer to the question it will be a ? and if not a !. And personally, I wouldn't use !?! or ?!?, it just seems redundant. You can argue all you want about "putting in 3 question marks and 7 exclamation points makes it perfectly clear that the person is 70% angry and 30% curious" but I don't buy that shit. As a writer you're supposed to make things clear and easy to read. Generally the ability to convey more with less is better, unless you're going for a hefty word style, like poetic-styled prose. But generally I can imagine why you might want to use both ! and ?, but using more than one of each seems over the top.
But that's personal opinion.

I'm digging it too. It's a really fun idea c:
"Suddenly Frodo noticed that a strange-looking weather-beaten man, sitting in the shadows near the wall, was also listening intently to the hobbit-talk. He had a tall tankard in front of him, and was smoking a long-stemmed pipe curiously carved. His legs were stretched out before him, showing high boots of supple leather that fitted him well, but had seen much wear and were now caked with mud. A travel-stained cloak of heavy dark-green cloth was drawn close about him, and in spite of the heat of the room he wore a hood that overshadowed his face; but the gleam of his eyes could be seen as he watched the hobbits."

Thank you Millo!! I'm actually really nervous... most of the applicants write in a poetic way, and I'm very simplistic. I like telling a story rather than writing a masterpiece haha! Hopefully the judges like my style!

Ugh Guardian I can imagine that'd be such a pain. The one I'm currently working on has a 1st place prize of $500, a publication in their magazine, and a free signed book from the author who is also the judge. And they choose the winner in a one month period! I can't even imagine how hard that would be to go through all the submissions and pick just one.
