Challenge Yourself 7: Sprites!

Postby Spike » Mon Jul 18, 2005 10:43 am

Congrats, Kirby, for winning Challenge#6!

As per his suggestion, this week's challenge is "Sprites". There is one new rule specific to this challenge: NO BASES or DOLLS for your sprites! All sprites are to be made FROM SCRATCH.

Yeah, that's right biznitches, I changed the name of the contest and there's nothing you can do about it. I really really really want to emphasize the purpose of the Challenge. The purpose is not to beat so and so or his dog. The purpose is to expand your own capacity. The reason is to give you a direction to practice in and a reason to draw something you wouldn't normally do. Don't look at the challenge and say "Oh, I can't do that because I'm not good at this, I'll sit this one out." or "Oh, so and so already entered and they're soooooooo good, I could never win!"

I don't really care either way if you do that, but the only one missing out is you. To put forth an analogy in music, say you have a piece that is within your level except for one line that is really really difficult. The better artist is not the one who plays everything else flawlessly and just practices what he already can play, never improving. The better artist is the one who realizes what he can already play and works late into the night practicing the one part that he *can't* play.

Well that's my tirade. Have at it!

ZEE RULES
Entries that do not follow the rules below will be disqualified, with or without notification.

>Submissions MUST have been made during this week. Submissions will be accepted until sometime next Saturday (7/30) at which point, they will be judged. The winner gets to pick the next weekly challenge!

>Multiple submissions are accepted during the challenge.

>With your submission, YOU MUST post your suggestion for next week! This will expediate the changeover process. So, with your first submission into the contest, just say "My suggestion for the next challenge is: ______", and we can go back and find it if you win. EVEN IF YOU SUBMIT MULTIPLE ENTRIES, only submit one suggestion please!!

***Rules specific to *this* challenge:***
>NO BASES OR DOLLS! This means that, no matter how much you change it, I WILL NOT ACCEPT something that started as a megaman sprite or whatever. If you're unsure of how to make sprites, you can use one as *reference*, but yours should be made on a completely blank canvas.

>The only other rules are the applicable forum rules!

HAVE AT IT!!

Is there a size limit on the sprites? I don't know much about them, to be honest...

I can't find a link to any right now, anyone who could do so would really help me out. Chimpo McCrazypants is a PRO at them, though.

No size limit, but they have to be *obviously* sprites. Pixel art counts.

Added after 3 minutes:

Here's Chimpo's page (please don't revive it >_<) there are a lot of sprites in the toppost. Should give you a better idea. But yeah, basically old-school game charas, from the days before polygons.

General rule of thumb about making sprites. You can't make them big and shrink them down. Because then they look like shit.

You can only work at a zoomed in rate... pixel for pixel.

Image

(This isn't my entry, I made it months ago, just an example.)

I wound up drawing her, shrinking her way down, then coloring pixels over that. Which is very roundabout, but it works.

No, I've actually heard of others making sprites that way, sketching and then shrinking down the sketch to scale and pixelling over that. I just kinda giver.

No, I know what sprites ARE, I just wasn't sure if there was more to it than making a character pixel by pixel.

Is there a good program to use for this? I have a feeling Photoshop doesn't do pixel art well...but I'll poke my head in and see what's going on, in between Guild Wars trips (just picked it up this morning...DAAAANGEROUS game!)

PS works fine, you can also do it in Paint, actually. for PS you just need to make sure to have a completely transparent canvas and you need to use your pencil tool set on 1px brush size NO ALIASING.

Shouldn't give you too many problems, I find at least basic sprites pretty quick.

Heres a good site to look at if you still need some ideas on sprites. http://sprites.fireball20xl.com/NSA/HTML/Other/ssbm.htm
I also leave for vacation tomorrow afternoon and wont be back until friday night, I hope i can get atleast one in before then.

No it doesn't, but you could work with the topic and "Challenge Yourself" to make some animated sprite things. ^_^

this was a quicky. Any way I got the color and basic design from Spike's Avatar.

Be kind, this is the first sprite I've ever done. It is meant to be Jack the Ripper, an unknown assailant who in 1888 brutally murdered at least 5 prostitutes with no known sexual conatation. He was never found.
The cloak spreading out at the bottom is to give the impression of him being shadow-like. I wasn't sure how easy it was to see, so there is the sprite at the size it was drawn, and enlarged. See if you can pick which is which!

Pretty neat :D You should try adding some shading and hilight next to give it more dimensionality!

Yeah, I may redo it some point during the week-I only saved it as a jpeg, I've lost the bitmap, so I've only got screwy colours to work with, but I'll do it again, and maybe some others

*shakes his head* Thing to remember: sprites saved under JPEG or JPG (etc.) usually come out blurred. >.>

Image

Anyway, my own character, Shiro Wong, in Final Fantasy Tactics style. Done from scratch while only referencing to an Agrias sprite for how Square made the body features at that wacked out angle. I'm currently doing characters for a comic at another forum I go to, so I might post them, as well. (If I get enough together, that is.) XP

Oh, and my suggestion for next weeks contest is... *thinks* ... Id fanart. Id is a character from Xenogears, a game made by The Company Formerly Known as Squaresoft. *digs out an old Prince joke*

Great job, Shiro :D You did all of those this week??

And yeah, Jpg is the DEVIL for sprites. You'll definitely want to save the bases as Photoshop (if yah got it) or as an indexed transparent gif or png. Jpegs alias the shite out of everything, hence bieng really terrible for spriting. Just a tip :P

Yeah, I had just gotten finished with redoing all of them earlier, after adding a few more poses. As for Photoshop... Only reason I've only posted a small sprite sheet instead of a comic is because I don't have it. (And I don't stay on long enough to DL it with this slow comp.)

Paint and Gifs both have a limited pallate, they don't have the same number of colours as Jpgs within their capacity. Pngs are ideal because you can choose the number of colours you want in your pallate, and they're generally fairly close to the real colour.
