Grieffon's scenery n' stuff (Back and better than ever)

Postby Grieffon » Tue Jan 14, 2014 9:03 pm

Hello y'all, I'm Grieffon and I started on digital painting not too long ago. I had always been fascinated by digitally-rendered landscape, so that's probably what most of my stuff will be. At least until I figure out how gesture and anatomy works.

Here's my stuff so far:

Some speedpaint using photo reference:

A Rainbow Dash portrait I did for fun:

And this one I made just yesterday, no direct references:

These took about 2-3 hours each. I will try to stop procrastinating and get these done more frequently, and then maybe I can cut the time for these to 1 hour. As it is, a good artist could get those done in 20 minutes and they would still look a lot better than mine...

Also, I'm not very good with praises, so I maaaay criticize without encouraging positive words. If what I say is unpleasant to hear, I apologize and I hope you all don't mind too much.

These are all beautiful Grieffon. I especially love your beached boat and mountain drawings. Great job! And welcome to the art forum c:

I can draw a really fancy stick figure in an hour :c
The fact that you can make these in a couple, shows your talent :3
I think I've seen your Rainbow Dash before, have you posted it in the MLP thread?

Yeah, the MLP thread was probably where you saw it before.

Here's a new one, 2 hours:

This time, I tried to use many references instead of just 1 like before. I still can't get clouds to look right. Gotta work on that.

About 2.5 hours. I started to pay attention to perspective, and experiment with a monochromatic color scheme and a darker tone. Keeping enough contrast while maintaining low values is surprisingly hard.

Well, someone has to make all those floating rocks and islands people paint everywhere.

1 hour speedpaint. Since school is starting soon, I need to learn to get things done in less time.

No, 1 hour is the time after I managed to cut down to. So far, all of my stuff takes 2-3 hours. Hopefully I can make things even faster.

Studying anatomy and perspective, I got bored, so I tried doing a 30-minute sketch.

I've always loved sketching random stuff, that and coloring/shading has always been very calming for me. Its also why I enjoy looking at other people's sketches. Nice little area you drew its very interesting to look at.

So I couldn't really tell what it was supposed to be to start off with...

Then I was all like, Is it a winding stone walkway in the middle of a cavern filled with stalagmites and stalactites?

No, it's an absurdly even and flat winding stone walkway in the middle of a cavern filled with stalagmites and stalactites. I could add some stalactites and stalagmites above and beneath the path, but I'd rather not spend too much time on details for something just for practice.

I cleaned up a few misplaced brush strokes that really stood out though.

I really like your landscape speed paints. The black and white ones look like it could be a Limbo stage.
