COMIC ART MATERIALS

Postby Gizmo » Wed Jan 08, 2014 9:43 pm

I'd like to ask everyone out there a question about art materials. Okay for 1 how many of you all use mechanical pencils for sketching? (i do ^w^) The reason I'm asking is because my sister is always critiquing me and my way of art so wanna hear what you think. Im going offline now but you can still reply. we'll talk about it.

This may be moved to the Art Section.

I'm not much of an artist, but I prefer doodling with regular pencils.
My cartooning class has gotten me into the habit of retracing some lines with ink. I have to say, it makes the doodles look a lot better imo.

Hmm. Gizmo, while this thread isn't in violation of any rule or code of conduct, I can move it to the Art Discussion Thread/Art Forum. If I move it, you might get more and better responses to this questions as man of the artists we have don't drop by here that often. But I can also leave it here, its your call.

Bam.

Moved over from Snafu General on behalf of Gizmo. He has a few art questions.

Gizmo wrote:I'd like to ask everyone out there a question about art materials. Okay for 1 how many of you all use mechanical pencils for sketching? The reason I'm asking is because my sister is always critiquing me and my way of art so wanna hear what you think.

I use some normal mechanical pencils for it, but I also have about four different pencil sets that range from 6H to 8B. Drawing pencils are rated for their hardness of lead. H rated pencils are harder and leave a lighter stroke. B rated pencils are softer and leave a darker stroke. The mechanical pencil you are using is most likely a HB lead that works as a happy medium.

I like mechanical pencils because they always remain sharp, so I use them when I'm outlining my characters and for some small stuff. BUT the other pencil ranges allow me to sketch without leaving horrible lines after erasing and the soft leads are great for shadowing.

Yes, you can do it all with a HB. Not really a problem, but the other pencils serve their purpose too and if you learn and master those pencils, your drawing ability will increase significantly. An artist can be limited by the tools they use.

The problem with using mechanical pencils is exactly the reason Blood Lord mentioned: they are always sharp, by design. Which isn't a problem when trying to make more accurate lines, like, say, creating blueprints for a building or using it with rulers to create buildings--or, again, to get some more finer details in. Basically, though? A mechanical pencil is best used for methodical things, or I guess graphic art.

It becomes a problem with regards to line quality and shading, however, because you preferably want a traditional pencil in order to vary the thickness of your lines (drawing with the very tip of the lead versus drawing with the side of the lead, for example), and it's harder to shade evenly with a mechanical pencil because mechanical pencils are just designed so that you never have a side to use, only a point. Not unless you tip your pencil a bit so that part of your mechanical pencil's lead has a side, but like...it's still very tedious to do that, and is still liable to mess up if you accidentally use the point rather than the tiny side you've created while shading.

That all said though...for sketching purposes, I don't really see an issue with using either mechanical or traditional pencils, since a sketch is just a sketch, not a finished product. I personally use mechanical pencils myself, too, though if I want to attempt shading, or a more completed, fine art thing, I would definitely use traditional pencils.

majority of computer artist use graphic tablets like me, lets you draw as if you were using a pencil and pen, if you really want to look into it, save up 90 dollars and go buy a wacom tablet, its what most computer artists use.

Personally, whenever I'm using something alot, I get much better on the other, if I use paper alot, I get better at using my tablet, if I use my tablet too much I become better at traditional

No though, seriously look into getting a wacom , its worth it.

$90? Hmm. The Wacom Tablet I'm looking at runs up to $350.

I use paper, for the moment. I want to move on to being able to use the computer with programs like Photoshop or GIMP, but I want to get a few more skills under my belt before then.

Alright ( and if I'm talking too much, just tell me when to STFU. ) my parents shun anime but theyll let me watch a " cartoon" with an exact same look. She said it's because the characteristics of anime. I don't think there's a thread for this but if there is please move it. What are the characteristics of anime that make it....well anime?

another common characteristic is the often raunchy humor of "every day life anime" which is alot less spectacular and boob filled as the japs make it seem.

Maybe you watch too amny animes with childishly adult humor

... :( Well H.O.T.D is out. Oh and about my art, I wont be able to put the site up at the library because their system blocks it for "Explicit Art" (thats stupid) but if you want to see the pic I currently have on there, you can just go to DeviantArt and look up DoujinshiDreamer (no space) I'm sure something will pop up.

Anime can get pretty sketchy at times - HotD, the one you mentioned, is a good example of it. There are multiple reasons behind why parents feel that way, even if there is nothing in it, anime is historically known to be a little raunchy at times.

If you're looking for artistic characteristics of anime, its usually found in the extremes of the eyes and facial expressions. There is huge variation in doing the look though, so unless you are trying to perfectly mimic someone else's style, your own will develop in time. When practicing it, I'd look at the different ways people draw the anime style and find a grove that fits you. My cousin and I, for example, draw the heads very differently from each other. He uses a simple circle and a triangle for the jaw. I sketch it out as close as i can in an oval form and then round the face out as I detail the rest of the body.

Your library won't let you access to DA? Not unheard of. I'll link your DA account here for some people to look at - you can copy the link and make your own art thread. Do you have a different place where you upload your images to DA?

Some people post their own comics up in their threads.

If you mean text only, I don't think it'd much of a problem, but you can always make your own thread in the Literature Section if you want.
