CHALLENGE YOURSELF REDUX: CONTEST ONE

Challenge Yourself is an official Snafu Art forum contest. It operates on a bi-weekly(ish) cycle,
as explained below. As the title suggests, the idea is not to best each other, but to best yourself!

THEME
Environments, Landscapes, and Backgrounds
Draw a setting of any type without humans or animals (or any kind of fauna).

RULES

• Only visual art allowed (does not have to be drawn by hand.). Art must conform
  with the Snafu Art forum rules.
  
• Art must be created WITHIN the cycle time. You MAY NOT use art you
  created last week, last month, last year, or ever before this cycle.
  These pieces may be posted as demonstration of the theme, but MUST be
  marked as previous work.
  
• Multiple submissions totally allowed. Only the latest will be judged, however.
  Furthermore, I want a link to either your art thread or DA account for easy reference.
  
• Submissions must be related to the theme in some way. This is fairly
  open to interpretation, but it shouldn't be too hard for people to see
  how it is related.
  
• Judges cannot submit contest entries.

Judging
Submissions will be judged by me (Acktoo). The criteria for judging are:
CREATIVITY, EXECUTION (skill), and EFFORT. Please note that you are
judged against YOURSELF (your previous demonstrated works) and not so
much against each other! In this contest, a new artist who puts in a
tremendous amount of creativity and effort can defeat an experienced
artist who has more skill and experience, but didn't push themselves.

Translation
If you draw some images that took five minutes and/or you put no effort in them
what so ever, you won't make it in the top three.

Judges may enter pieces into the contest, but they will be exhibition
only. Non-judges may also mark their own submission as an 'exhibition' piece.
Such will not be subject to judgment.

The Process
Challenges operate on a two week cycle. The contest officially begins on

MONDAY: Contest begins, submissions accepted. Submissions will be accepted
until the FRIDAY after next (almost 2 weeks later). (Start: MONDAY, January 17)

FRIDAY after next: No more submissions accepted. Entries will be judged.

SATURDAY: Winners will be announced. Then suggestions for the next challenge begin.
I reserve the right to reject challenge suggestions based on vagueness, being too similar
to a recent challenge, or unfeasibility. (Submission period ends Friday, January 29)

SUNDAY: Voting begins.

An artist did once make the point to me that the biggest drawback of the tablet is that you can't exactly bring it with you into nature or the zoo or whatever.

what happened? everyone was revved for this! i did mine in a day i was so excited sure i didn't shade it but at school were doing animation and you don't shade animation bgs so i wanted to stick with the theme. Get off your asses lazy people! I even went out of my comfort zone and drew a full page! get working! >=3

Yes, yes, calm down Broken Line, I'm done.

Or as done as I'm going to get. I don't really like it. The composition sucks, the foreground is very 2D, it's black and white and the imagery wayyyy corny. I tried a number of things (paper drawings, of real envirorments, of imagined, buildings, hills), however, and this one was the only one that worked at all. Bleh. Quite a humbling task.
