Nah. Sorry, was stuck in Hammer logic (been learning how to use it for a while). In there, 3D skyboxes are linked to to another box with a "camera", which displays everything in the second box in (I think) 16x scaling.
So, say you put your robot in one box, and put 3d skybox textures on the walls. Then in a second box (again talking about the Hammer editor here) you put the camera and a few different items. The items would be shown outside the bounds of the first box, with their size multiplied several times. It's usually how mapmakers add environments outside the bounds of their maps, besides using a basic skybox.
