EDIT: Also, the fuck is a "cour" supposed to be anyway?
Season from a viewer perspective always used to refer to each 12/13 group of episodes of an anime, reinforced by the fact that anime releases tend to correspond with the actual seasons. However within the industry a season is whatever the producer wants it to be, whether that be 12 episodes or 1000, the number of episodes per season doesn't matter at all to them because anime airs year round. More commonly they'll break up the seasons based on whether or not a run was continuous, in other words SAO season 1 is episode 1-26 because they all aired week after week then there was a break before SAO season 2. If there was no break then SAO S2 would just be SAO episode 27+.
Cour is a apparently the word the french use to describe their 'season' and it basically matches up with the original viewer perspective of a group of 11-13 episodes. It's pretty dumb to have to change the lingo but people are starting to use that.
