Sunny Skies - An Adventure RP

Introductions

“Come come my children, I do seem to have a story to tell. Just one before bed” An anticipation as thick as pea soup filled the air as a smattering of raggedy children of all ages spread themselves out before an elderly man with a kind smile and even kinder heart. The old man was the current purveyor of the Amber Falls orphanage.

“Ooh ooh, are you going to tell us about the old woman in the shoe again?” Asked a particularly young girl.

“Nah tell us another story about the witch hunter.” Came a shout from a sly looking boy.

“No no, the ghost collector.” Rang yet another child. Soon the room was filled with shouts and request for one story or another.

The elderly man just raised his hands. The room immediately went silent. “Now now children. I’ve got an even better tale than all those for tonight.” Their little ears perked with interest. “How’s about I tell you the tale of Sunny Skies hmm?” The room was silent. Not a sole had heard that tale yet. The man slowly began rocking back and forth in his ancient rocking chair. “My children, let me tell you a tale of mystery, of magic, of war, rising darkness, and more than a little mayhem.” The man chuckled. “It started a good many years ago, right here in Amber Falls…”

Premise

Welcome my friends to Amber Falls, a village founded near the base of the sprawling Great Amber Falls on the border of the country of Syl. The distant roar of the falls and its spectacular golden waters however are barely of any notice to the citizens of the village of amber. You will be playing a group of children as they take their first few steps into the great wide world. For the past few years in addition to your more basic schooling you have also taken up an apprenticeship. There are many important jobs to be done in Amber Falls and everyone is expected to take up an occupation.

To that effect when an apprentice’s master believes their student ready they are each sent into the world to hone their craft. Theirs is not a long journey to make but it is an important one in a growing child’s life. The children are sent on their way to the near by city of Crenshaw. There they are to check in with the city’s Dawn Guild. The Dawn Guild, which has branches all throughout Syl, specializes in apprentice/master matchmaking and finding work for those who find themselves in need. After one year of hard work and training, students are expected to once again make the journey and return to Amber Falls where they will be greeted with much fanfare and granted all the rights and responsibilities of an adult.

Let it be known however that not all is well in the village of Amber Falls. The adults and local leaders have been late night meetings, and always return looking grim, local hunters spent more time in the woods yet seemingly brought back less game, and couriers came back and forth from Crenshaw more frequently than the sleepy woodland town had ever seen, bearing more than one message inscribed with the royal seal. All this however is pretence to the annual graduation ceremonies, which for the first time in ages are taking place early.

Religion
Amber Falls much like the rest of Syl is kind of a melting pot of beliefs. There is no real official religion but the followers of Emball are in the majority currently. The current king is a follower and much of the noble and upper classes followed suit. The followers of Emball believe that Emball created life the universe and everything the retired to watch as events play themselves out over the countless millenia. Emball is lover of life but also only an observer. Upon death, the followers believe, that if they have been faithful servants and protectors of life they will join Emball in his eternal observance and when all is said and done be reborn when the world is reborn anew. The followers of Emball don't generally worship or prey to their god. It's pointless, as they believe that Emball knows and sees all, including what is in their hearts. They merely try to live their lives the best they can. As Emball is an observer and does not interfere in mortal affairs, only the actions of mortals can better the actions of mortals.

In relative minority are the followers of the Panterian Pantheon. Several hundreds of years ago the wanderer Panteria traveled the lands telling stories of the gods to the people. Upon her death, it is said that Panteria ascended to the pantheon taking her place as herald of the gods and god herself of myths and legends. The pantheon itself contains a great many gods. There's one for pretty much anything you can think of. The most well known deities however are Aria, goddess of the sun and life, Nin, goddess of the moon and death, Sen, god of nature and forests, Kirn, god of agriculture and good harvest, and Mortonilt god of ill fortune and bad luck. There are of course many more so feel free to add your own as you see fit. Followers of the Pantheon prey not to their god of choice but rather to Panteria. As herald of the gods, worshipers believe that Panteria once mortal herself serves as a bridge between the mortal plane and the immortal plane of the gods. She has the responsibility of ushering prayers to the gods. Worship is usually done at a shrine or to a small statue of Panteria.

I'm thinking of doing a druid. Question Couch, are druids in this world closer to mages, are they shamans, are they healers.. are there druids at all, for that matter?

Name: Alexander Grier

Age: 15

Gender: Male

Appearance: Alexander is a tall boy with a sort of ragged look to him, and just by looking at him you could tell he's been working all day from the oil stains on his clothes to the natural tan he gets from working in heat all day. He's a bit skinny for your average guy , but has muscle on him nonetheless Alexander also exhibits something strange for a boy, snow white hair with blackened edges most likely from his work. On the left side of his face he bears a scar that runs from his cheek all the way down his jaw. He wears jean like dusty brown colored overalls which hang over his black rubbery boots. Wherever he goes he always is wearing gloves because even while not working his mind is focused on work.

Apprenticeship: Alexander is a Blacksmith by trade who loves to go above and beyond with his creations, leading him to tinker excessively in his spare time, and was taught fire magic by his father to help him with his Smith'ing.

Magic:

*Alexander uses very basic Fire magic to create or repair metal items.*

*Alexander also possesses a hammer passed on to him by his father which when striking objects such as rock or stone gives him the ability to craft with it as he would metal but allowing whatever he strikes to keep it's original properties once crafted and stuck again.

Example: Alexander strikes a piece of wood with his hammer thus making it temporarily absorb the quality of metal and not get turned to ash when exposed to fire, also making the wood flexible after being put in a fire. After being bent into shape Alex strikes the wood with is hammer again reverting it to the way it originally was(but will remain in it original crafted form). On the clause that once something has been struck by the hammer once, it can never be struck again with the same effect.

Equipment:

* Standard Blacksmith equipment ,and tools.*
* An onyx dagger kept in his left sleeve used for defense*
*A magic hammer given to him from his father*

Personality: Alexander is socially awkward (this most likely due to the fact he spends almost all his time in his workplace.)but not shy. He has a humble nature but often oversteps his boundaries when he starts to talk to much. At heart Alexander is kind and loyal, but can be stubborn and bull headed on certain topics, much to the frustration of others, an Example being Alexander strongly refuses to make weapons, unless in an emergency like time , however he will repair weapons.Alexander strongly opposes violence as a first course of action and believes in trying to be diplomatic about things. Alexander also has a curious and quick thinking manner to him leading him to invent many strange and wonderous things. The things he can created are now potentially limitless thanks to the hammer his father gave him.

History:

Alex comes from a family that only three generations before him had been nobility, but due to his lazy and lecherous great grandfather all of their money was squandered and they became peasants.
Sometime before his grandfather passed away ,he created the families' current blacksmith shop.
Alexander's Father received a hammer which could turn almost anything into a smith-able substance( See conditions in *Magic* section) ,which Alex has only recently been given due to his father's rapidly decreasing health. In many aspects Alexander has lived a very sheltered life, by his own choice, which gives him a certain awkwardness when dealing with people.Alexander almost always refuses to make weapons because bandits raided the store aware of the many great things that were made in this store that could not be found anywhere else, after beating the father near to death, when he refused to make anything for them ,the bandits raided the store and ran.
which led to his rapidly decreasing health. Which Alexander blames on the creation of weapons themselves. During this period the father gave Alexander his hammer and told him how to use it
"Strike once and almost any item you can grab will become craft-able like metal.Strike twice and it will revert to its natural state, but after that it can never again be used on that object."
He instructed him to build the shop back up again with this tool, and is now running the shop again with his bedridden father's instructions guiding him .

Mayhap not 'druids' per se, but there is not reason why you can't play a character with a druid like bend towards nature and animals. You could easily enough be an herbalist as much as a breeder of horses or something. Try not to think of your typical D&D classes so much as profession. Classes are rather more broad.

WIP

Character Sheet

Name: Ariannah Lockhart (Anna for short)

Age: 14

Gender: Female

Image

Appearance: Anna is about 4 ft tall and petit, yet appears to have a charming and adorable demeanour. Her hair is a wiry red mess from being kept under her hat, but she also has one single braided lock that dangles on the left side of her face. Her blue eyes reflect her very kind and gentle nature. She has a slightly tanned, rosie complexion and a sweet smile.

She wears a dark red dress and striped stockings on her feet. Over her dress she dons her white apron that shows signs of working tirelessly in the bakery. During working hours she also dons large oven mitts that had always been too big for her, yet kept her hands nice and cosy during winter. Last but not least she strides through the town wearing her brown leather boots.

Apprenticeship: Anna is the Apprentice Baker at the Baker’s Mill.

Magic: Enchantment: Anna has learnt a few nifty spells that allow her to turn ordinary kitchen equipment into little helpers to get the job done (Think of Beauty and The Beast, plus Fantasia)

Equipment:

• A collection of recipes/tips in her apprentice cookbook.
• A few changes of clothes e.g. dresses
• Her large rolling pin, whisk, stirring spoon and carving knife.
• A bag of cookies and a loaf of fresh bread

Personality: (Tell me about your character; how they think, how they act, how they feel. All that good stuff goes here.)

History: (Tell me about your past here. How was your life growing up, how was your apprenticeship, how did you get it, what has it taught you, do you even like it? All that fun and juicy stuff goes here.)

It's a start. I won't go much farther without the GM's approval on her apprenticeship and magic.

Name: Alexandra Gilbert (though prefers to go by Alex)

Age: 16

Gender: Female

Appearance: Alex has long, dark brown hair that hangs to her mid-back, chocolatey brown eyes, and a slim, tall and well endowed body. Her face, as well as much of her arms and part of her legs, are covered in freckles half-hidden by a tan. Under her rather loose clothing, Alex is quite muscular.

Alex wears mostly red plaid shirts and denim overalls, the sleeves and legs rolled up in the summer, as well as a pair of thick work boots to protect her feet from anything she may step on or in. Her hair is usually kept in a ponytail or bun, keeping it out of her eyes and out of the way of her work. She also wears a pair of thick gloves when carrying an ax, dragging a wagon or pushing a wheelbarrow.

Apprenticeship: Alex is the apprentice to the town woodcutter, logger, or any other name for the man who cuts down trees. She helps him with anything he asks and, when it's time for a break, the two of them have nice talks.

Magic: All that she knows how to do is a spell that will sharpen a blade.

Equipment: Ax, it's good for more than chopping wood, it's great for chopping wild animals. She prefers to catch her food but carries some rations with her just in case.

Personality: Alex is a calm girl, most of the time, and is usually in a good mood. She likes to hang out with her friends but also likes her job and teacher, who happens to be her uncle. She sometimes disappears for days on end in the forest with her uncle/teacher for some elongated training, though if she knows this will happen beforehand, she tells her friends. If anyone was hurt, she would run as fast as she could, which is pretty fast, to find help. She is also a hard girl to piss off. However, if you do manage to, she will attack, usually with her ax if she has it or her bare hands if she doesn't. She also loves to hang around women. Just looking at a woman's bright smile or imperfect figure will put her in a better mood.

History: Ever since Alex was little, she's wanted to march around with her father's ax. She wasn't strong enough to swing it around at the time and nearly cut off her feet multiple times. The most she lost was a toe. She's missing a total of 2 toes, the smallest toe on each foot. How she managed that, not even she can explain.

Her mother died when she was young. Her dad had originally told her she'd run away because she wasn't old enough to understand death. When he thought she was old enough, he explained what really happened. She had been mad that he lied to her but she understood. As such a young age, she wouldn't have understood or, the very slim possibility she did, she would've started bawling. She was still crying after her dad told her the truth, though, because any sane person would. Her father had let her cry on his shoulder. Since then, her father has been teaching her how to take care of herself.

She was seen outside with her father's ax, though only 12 at the time, in the woods chopping at a tree, two more downed trees beside her, by a large man in a plaid shirt and overalls. She had first been afraid but, after the man introduced himself, she began feeling she could trust him. To be nice, she offered for him to meet her father. The man had respectfully declined, but that only made the girl more persistent. She eventually convinced the man to walk her home, the two of them talking the whole way.

Her father met her and the man, his brother, at the door. "Alex, get washed up for dinner, I need to speak to your uncle." Alex had been confused but did as her father told her. That night, she found out the man that had walked her home was her mother's younger brother. She then understood. She had known her dad never got along with her mother's family, she never knew exactly why, and it had only worsened after her death. Her father had told her they just didn't get along and disagreed on too many things. He respected her uncle as a man and knew he would teach her well, so he let her uncle teach her the bits and pieces of his work.

It's been four years since then and, though she is still learning and growing, Alex is becoming a respectable woman very quickly. Working hard, having fun and eating well. Alex has come to love her uncle as family and respects him as a man, in both his strength and his intelligence, though not much is needed for chopping down trees.

She has made a few friends, mostly girls, and sometimes can be caught trying to flirt, though failing because she doesn't know how. She doesn't want to ask her friends or her family, in fear of what they would think. She only wants to find the perfect woman, build her a house, protect her from harm and love her forever.

Name: Gregory Hanstein

Age: 16

Gender:Male

Appearance: Gregory is a well-built boy for his height, standing at 5'8" and weighing in at 160 lbs, he has a decent amount of muscle from his job, specifically located in his back and arms. He has short brown hair which is light and feathery. He has a face that always seems distant and day-dreamy, even though he is actually a very concentrated and focused person. Gregory usually wears simple clothes that are more functional than stylish, though he does clean up well and has some young admirers his own age. His skin is paler than he would like it to be, as his job does not usually involve being outside; he does often take breaks to eat outside, though, and has developed some healthy callouses on his feet because he prefers walking barefoot while on break.

Apprenticeship: Gregory is the apprentice at the local general goods store. The store functions as a goods store for the town as well as a pawn shop for travelers.

Magic: Gregory can use a type of magic that lets him identify the properties of an object, and whether an object is authentic or not, which is usually used to distinguish whether money or treasures are fake or not, a useful skill for a merchant to have, as there is the occasional ne'er-do-well who tries to pawn off what they claim to be a long-lost treasure.

Equipment: Gregory owns a knife which was a gift for the first time he caught a counterfeit item being traded. The man claimed it was a knife used to kill a king in the past, and that it was blessed by several holy figures. It was actually a regular knife, but one with a particular property that would allow it to become imbued with magical powers by certain mages. Currently Gregory has not met any such mage, but he does keep the knife with him as a proud keepsake of his accomplishment in spotting the fake. He also carries a small scale to measure gold and will be bringing on his journey a book with details regarding several fabled treasures, a scale to weigh precious stones, some changes of cloths, and several other note-keeping tools.

Personality: Gregory is an all-around good guy. He is friends with most of his peers or at least is an acquaintance. He is oftentimes much more carefree when in his off-time, often finding time to sleep under trees and in general just be outside. However, when behind the counter, he adopts a very different persona: shrewd, methodical, and practical, these are just some descriptors of the businessman he becomes when on the job. He has often given his friends light punches on the shoulder in the past as he has caught them trying to nick items from the store. Though he considers Amber Falls to be his home, he hopes to take some time during his life to see the world as a traveling salesman.

Gregory has a phobia regarding deserts and genuinely does enjoy being in them or anywhere near them. He prefers cities and forests above other sorts of terrain as far as travel is concerned. He is usually brave but is still a youth and isn't as well acquainted with the arcane as most who have knowledge in the fields of magic or shamanism.

History: Gregory was born the son of a book-keeper for the Amber Falls' Library. He grew up unlike his parents, who were both bookworms, in that he preferred to be outside and socialize with others his age. He made it his duty to get to know most every other child in Amber Falls and spent much of his childhood accomplishing just that. Eventually, when it was time for him to choose an apprenticeship, he applied to be a woodsman but lost out on the chance to Alexandra. Instead, he began work at the general store named "Amber Falls General Wares" where he still works to this day.

During his time as a beginner, Gregory was mainly tasked with stocking the store and delivering parcels, which the shopkeeper explained was to help build up his physique, as a better looking worker would often sell more. He eventually began to go through puberty and became a handsome young man with a nice physique and a pleasant attitude, and he began to work the store as a clerk, where he learned scanning magic and began to interact more with customers from distant lands. This sparked an interest to travel in the young boy and he looks forward to the graduation ceremony alongside his friends so that he may travel the world afterward before returning to Amber Falls to start a family.

Name: Zephrin Seams (he prefers to be called "the Fabulous")
Age: 15 years old
Gender: Male

Appearance:
Image
^This is merely an example of the sort of handcrafted pieces of clothing that he’ll wear.
Other articles include this vest, this outfit, this fab tunic, and whatever the hell that is.
(he doesn’t actually own that last one)
Zephrin enjoys experimenting with other styles, including the exquisite nobleman’s style.
He gets offended whenever people make fun of his love for lace, or his tendency to embroider articles of clothing with flowers or trees. A lot of such happens tend to be very common in his designs and he wears proof of these tendencies proudly. For footwear he prefers poulaines, some of which make outrageous fashion statements.
When traveling, he likes to bring along this thing of beauty.
Otherwise he prefers to walk around hatless.

Apprenticeship: An apprentice tailor under the guidance of the marvelous Sir Schnider.

Magic:
Enchantments
- - - -
Specifically enchantments akin to the faerie's glamour.

Zephrin has expressed an interest in cloth that can change the way other people view a person, to the point where one can appear as a completely different being. The world of illusion is one of his passions, and the magicians who practice it are held in high regard. "There is true beauty in illusion", is his philosophy. "It helps you see the magic in reality."
[the aforementioned quote has probably never been and probably shouldn't be uttered from Zephrin's lips, ever]

So far, the only enchantments Zephrin is able to cast is the simple invisibility spell which he had already managed to cast on a hooded cloak he keeps close to him. He's currently studying a way to enchant threads into making the wearer attractive to the beholder (for the ugly peasants). A lot of the glamour he uses only seem to work for certain materials (invisibility/silk, for example) so there still are a couple of areas needed to be explored. Zephrin's goal is to sell customizable glamour that he could sell to the rich to be used perhaps in something akin to spying or the like. He really doesn't care what people use his ideas for, so long the outfit itself looks good.

Equipment:
• Sewing kit
This handkerchief, one of the first things he sewed, which took months to finish. He carries it with him wherever he goes.
• A pair of shears, nice and sharp
A cloak he enchanted to make people invisible
A burlap bag (for extra items)

Personality: As a child of nobility, what else could be expected of Zephrin but the sensitivity of a turtle. Zephrin is as ignorant as can be about peasant life, and prefers to be addressed by his self given title "the Fabulous". He hates nicknames or anything of the short, and will most likely treat those who can't even take proper care of themselves like pigs from the slaughterhouse.

There is only one person he refuses to treat this way, after he caught some dirty tramps stoning the poor thing he decided that as nobility he would not stand for it. His sense of justice is just as high strung as his contempt for the dirty and cowardly. But nothing compares to his sense of FASHION JUSTICE.

One of the main reasons he dislikes the commonfolk so much, is because their inattentiveness to fashion. He could never understand how anyone could be so content with wearing rags all day. It just makes him sick to the bones. One of his goals is to completely eradicate this blasphemy to fashion, and make sure that everything remains in a constant state of fabulousness. His heart weeps for that day, and until then he's bent on helping out the poor unfashionable dears who deserve all the help they can get. Bullies and slobs are not included. As a child he was bullied himself for his colorful personality, so it really shouldn't come as much as a surprise.

Zephrin can be very outspoken about his opinions, to the point where it can become quite irksome, especially since he's not known to sugar coat anything.

If he does have a problem with you, he'll tell it as it is. He doesn't give a shit. He'll even go as far as to offer you advice in a pomptous sort of way. Again, he doesn't care.

Zephrin knows what he wants, and he will do anything to get it. Especially if it includes those that he loves.

He's no pushover, that's for sure.

When it comes to heights and swimming. Well, the only thing you'll hear from him is absolute defiance.

And in that sense, he is also a hypocrite.

He'll call others cowardly repeatedly throughout his life, but he will never admit that he himself is a coward.

So he has his good side and his bad side. All that matters is that everything is fabulous in the end.

Fashion has no room for disasters.

History:

Zephrin was born in the grand city of Crenshaw to the young Lady Annette and her noble husband Raphiet. Annette (called Ann in Amber Falls) was once a young girl from the small village who like Zephrin had a particular gift for the thread and needle, in particular she as a gifted embroiderer. Her plans as an apprentice seamstress to the celebrated Dr. Schnider (a privilege in that time, just as it is now) were not so different from Zephrin's current plans. She had wanted to open her own embroidery shop, creating exquisite designs for the ladies and the gentlefolk. All that changed when she met Raphiet, a nobleman who was lovesick after the death of his recent wife. She was ill and did not bear him any children, and he was looking for something pretty to bury her in. Ann offered to embroider her wedding dress for him (against her master's wishes), as long as he would allow it. During the long mourning period, Raphiet grew to adore Ann's delicate hands and eye for color. He was forever grateful when she helped him bury his wife, and came to pay her respects. For the next year or so he came to visit Dr. Schnider's shop (located in the same town), asking not for the famous tailor's outfits, but for his old outfits to be made even grander with the help of Annette (as he called her, or "my Lady Annette"). Neither his servants nor the townsfolk were blind to the truth, the fat Raphiet had fallen in love with the poor seamstress from Amber Falls.

It wasn't long until Raphiet would propose to her, showing her a wedding dress he had one of his servants make, something grander and more beautiful than his old wife's. Annette was grateful, but couldn't marry a man who was still grieving. The charade would continue, until she had finally accepted his pleas. They married publicly, with family from Amber Falls there to bear witness.

Zephrin was their first and only son. He had inherited both his mother's beauty and talent, but as Raphiet's son, he was expected to inherit his father's title and fortune and continue his work after his father had passed. Annette on the other hand wanted her son to study under her old mentor Sir Schnider. So, in an act against her husband's wishes she entered her son's name into the Dawn Guild's directory and used her acquired nobility to land him in the same apprenticeship she was in at his age.

Before Raphiet knew it, a letter came in the mail informing him that his son was to start an apprenticeship at Dr. Schnider's Tailorship at the age of thirteen.

Zephrin carried with him the same snobbish attitude his father had about the situation, who was force to accept the invitation as it was an order from the king himself. The cityfolk would talk about it for years, how a nobleman's son became nothing but a mere apprentice in merely a day. This meant no more social gatherings, no more mingling with the ladies, no more paid for tutorships, and no more servants. Zephrin got exactly what his mother wanted for him, a life of servitude, the life of an apprentice.

Ann did not do this for the sake of her husband's company, something she did not have a care for in the first place. Nor did she do it for the reputation.

She wanted her initial dream to be fulfilled, not in her name, but in her son's.

In the days following Zephrin's departure she would comfort her husband by reminding him how famous Zephrin would become. "He will be serving under the great Sir Schnider", she told him, "That in itself should be worthwhile for a boy who carries nobility."

Zephrin hated it, he hated it with a passion, and he grew to hate his own mother as well. After years of helping her with her embroidery projects, spending his days taking interest in her craft, never had he ever expected to be dumped in the hellhole that was "Amber Falls". Zephrin was terrified of water, and even worse heights. The roar of the falls was something he didn't wish to be hearing for the next four or five years of his life.

At first Zephrin took little to no interest in Sir Schnider's teachings, calling him a dirty old man with no taste. He was forced to slave away spinning wool for his master's creations, mingling amongst the commonfolk as if he was some kind of peasant.

One day he ran into what appeared to be a confrontation. He was coming home from purchasing wool from the local shepherds and right outside what appeared to be a toy shop. He had passed by the toyshop another of times before, only to comment on how ridiculous and childish the toys were, and how he would never dream of purchasing such monstrosities. But that day, he had unknowingly defended the honor of the toymaker's apprentice. A couple of commoners were throwing stones at her, calling her a freak. Outraged by such disrespect towards a young lady (tramp or not), Zephrin picked up a stone and begun throwing them back at the girl's attackers, yelling at them to stay back.

When they had given up on fighting him back, Zephrin was left with a few cuts and bruises at the foot of the toyshop's entrance, with an equally battered younger girl next to him. They locked their eyes, and somehow Zephrin knew that she was desperately in need of someone to love her. He noticed her wooden hand, and offered to sew up a glove for her. "I know how. That damned Sir Schnider made me learn the skill." He took her to Sir Schnider's Tailorship in secret, so he could steal one of his materials for Ariannah's new glove. He used the thread he had made and dyed just yesterday, it was a red wooly thread, perfect material for a glove. And it was a perfect fit too. Even today he remembers Ariannah telling him how talented he was, and how he should start his own tailorship. In fact, he would say it was Ariannah who gave him the idea in the first place. He would turn this rotten, dull town into the most fabulous town in all of Syl. Even kings would ask for his creations. The last thing he told Ariannah that day was, "Don't worry about what those dirty pigs say about you. You're the most beautiful girl I have ever laid eyes on." And he meant it, there was no one more beautiful.

Ever since then he grew diligent, passionate in his work. He would work after hours even, all for the sake of surpassing Sir Schnider, and becoming the greatest tailor in all of Syl. All of the pigs of the town would come begging at his shop's doorstep, and he would turn them all away. And he did this all for the toymaker's apprentice.

Every now and then he would sneak over there in secret, so he might help her with her creations. He especially liked sewing tiny outfits for her dolls and puppets. Her creativity was inspiring to him, and led him to create elaborate designs to celebrate childish fairy tales or the not so ordinary.

To put it simply, everything in his life was fabulous from then on.

He wouldn't have it any other way.

Name: Aldrnari

Age: 15

Gender: Female

Appearance: Aldrnari is a slight girl, a full head shorter than other girls her age and as light as a feather. She has a rounded face with only slightly distinguished cheekbones and a button nose. In combination with this is a fair scattering of freckles across the bridge of her nose and the tops of her cheeks. Her smile is graced by two faint dimples, and her teeth are just a tiny bit off center. Her big eyes are a dark grey, the color of the sea during a storm, that compliment her fiery red hair rather well. Her hair is quite curly, and left in an untamed mass that hangs to her shoulder blades, except for her bangs, which lie right on top of her eyebrows.

She wears simple dark brown men's trousers and a forest green men's tunic, with a wide brown leather belt and brown soft leather boots that lace up to just under her knees. The boots are soft-soled, making hardly any noise when Aldrnari walks. On her right forearm she wears a small leather bracer, turned inwards to protect the soft skin between her wrist and elbow. On the other hand she wears a leather gloves that only covers the first two fingers of her hand. Over it all Aldrnari wears a strange cloak, an overlarge thing that hides her shape, with a nondescript dappling of grey and light green dyed into it. It has a habit of making the girl seem to disappear when she holds still. The cape itself is quite ingenious, the baggy size not only hides the girls shape and whatever equipment she may be carrying and leaves her face in perpetual shadow when the hood is up, but has a special flap just above her left shoulder for her quiver, so she doesn't have to spend unnecessary time moving her cloak out of the way when she needs to fire. In addition to that, there are two small loops sewn into the middle of the back of the cloak, to hold her unstrung bow where it is still easy to reach.

Apprenticeship: Aldrnari is the apprentice of the Ranger Hroth. It is their job to patrol the deep woods outside of Amber Falls, doing anything from finding and rescuing lost travelers to killing bears, boars and wolves that might threaten the safety of the village. In times of greater trouble, their skills can be used to gather intelligence and dispatch those who would wish the town harm, such as bandits.

Magic: Aldrnari is terrible at magic, so she can really only use two small spells, well suited to her work. One allows her to heal small cuts, scrapes, and get rid of bruises, while the other allows her to always find north with a bit of stick in her palm.

Equipment: Aldrnari carries very little aside from her clothing, but the most prominent are her ranger weapons. The most visible is her bow, a solid but strange affair, where the ends of the bow curve forward again instead of going straight back like a good hunting bow ought to. Further inspection shows that the bow in question isn't made of a single piece of wood, but countless thin pieces that were glued together and made into that strange shape. It is a recurve bow, able to fire at a higher poundage than a regular bow.

Next is her saxe knife (short for sea axe.) Almost long enough to be a short sword, it is a solid piece of blue iron, and it's single side is razor sharp. Her final weapon is a throwing knife, with a broad leaf-shaped tip perfect for flying through the air. When not in use, the knives stay in well-oiled sheathes at the back of her belt. With her bow she wears a simple quiver filled with two dozen iron-tipped arrows. Within the bottom of the quiver she keeps spare arrowheads, goose feather fletchings, and a bar of glue that bonds the fletchings to the arrow shaft when heated.

The only other thing she carries as consistently as her weapons is a necklace she was found with as a child. It is a simple affair, a leather thong with a sparrow pendant made of polished abalone shell. Other than that, she carries a small leather knapsack where she keeps flint and tinder, a rather large water skin, a wooden bowl and spoon, several packets of dried herbs, emergency rations of dried meat and cornmeal, a long thin rope for setting snares, a spare set of clothes, and a very small iron saucepan for cooking. With this pack, she can survive on her own for several months without help. Of course, except for the bow and arrows, much of what she carries is obscured by her cloak, so it almost seems as if all these supplies appear by magic.

Personality: Aldrnari is a very curious girl. She is always exploring new places, both high and low. When with her master, she is always asking questions, but she is rather quiet around people from the town, and any other time that the situation calls for silence. She is quick-tempered, especially when it comes to other people talking about Hroth, who raised her as if she were his own daughter. She is very straight-forward and courageous, always taking a stand for what is right. Which means she has seen her fair share of trouble, and when caught at it, accepts her punishments humbly. A bit mischievous, Aldrnari is always trying to catch her master unawares. It never works, but it is good practice for her all the same.

History: Aldrnari is an orphan. She was found as a babe in the deep woods by Hroth, in a wagon containing all of the necessities for a family of three moving into the town, but things had not gone well when the family strayed for that path for some unknown reason. He had found her parents in a clearing nearby, both had been mauled to death by a bear. He buried them there, and examined their wagon more closely when he heard a soft cry. Knowing nothing about children, he took the girl anyways, knowing it would be unlikely that anyone else in the village would be willing to take her when they already had plenty of children of their own to attend to. He left her nameless for some time, until her red hair had grown enough for the wild tangles to show clearly what color they were. Then he immediately named her Aldrnari, or fire, because her hair resembled the flames so clearly, and he was a young man who had no sense for naming children. By and large, Hroth let the girl do as she pleased as she grew, so what she did was explore the forest, climbing trees and examining caves while Hroth did his work hunting animals that were too dangerous for anyone else to go after. And at the end of the day, after supper, Hroth would teach Aldrnari the ways of the ranger. She was still to young to become his apprentice, but it was better for her to have some sense when she was playing in the forest.

He taught her to recognize and track many different forms of animal prints. He taught her how to hide in plain sight by holding still, using her clothes as camouflage. He taught her how to avoid human detection as well, that by remaining motionless when someone was looking right at her meant she was less likely to be seen, and not to move right after someone looked away, because someone who knew what they were doing would snap back right away to catch any signs of movement, and to always be cautious when following a group of people, as they might be smart enough to use a tailing scout. As she got a little older he taught her how to fight with a knife and a bow, and how to hunt, so that by the time she was 10, she was almost entirely self-sufficient when in the woods. After that, he taught her how to read and how to write, and how to do math, skills she would need in town, and for some of the more dangerous missions that rangers were required to do.

When she was 11, Hroth officially accepted her as his apprentice, and began teaching her the ways of unseen movement, a most useful ranger skill. With it, Aldrnari could pop up out of nowhere, especially when waring her cloak. It required slow movements, using the environment to hide those movements. She could blend into the treetops by swaying with the movements, scale walls by flattening her body across the stone and use only her fingers and toes to move, how to crawl through the underbrush without shaking a single leaf. He taught her how to fight more efficiently with her knives, how to defend herself from a sword at close combat, how to hit a moving target with her bow and making her practice it all over and over and over again while still obediently getting the housework done, because what good is an apprentice who doesn't know how to be obedient, he always reminded her when she grumbled about doing them. She's never spent much time in the village, but has been seen occasionally running messages into town for Hroth, and has gotten into several arguments or even fights with anyone who badmouths Hroth for his bizzare upbringing of her, or for his profession, as not many people understand what being a ranger entails.
