Eh, go with what you want. Or Asmo. I'm not actually that excited, not "oh oh oh" excited, more like casually interested.

Besides, I might be making my own (RL) mecha game soon.

It's kind of always the type with both. A fully realistic mecha series would involve some military guy going "Hey let's make mechs" and then another guy going "No, that's dumb".

Considering that BG's inspiration here is Pacific Rim, though, I would imagine that we're headed into full giant robo territory. No seatbelts, no brakes, no square-cube law.

Well, yeah, mechs are never realistic, but there is at least aesthetic difference between "mechs are basically big, walking tanks" and "LETS FIGHT WITH LASER SWORDS AND MECHAS ARE POWERED BY THE SPIRIT OF IT'S PILOT"

I don't think there's a real fine line between 'realistic' mecha and 'fantasy' mecha... But strictly speaking I was going for the whole Pacific Rim style, though I don't see any reason why there couldn't be more 'practical' mechs lurking around somewhere.

Mechs. How about something like Rahxephon or Evangelion or Escaflowne! Sorry, those are the only mechs I like.

Oh! Oh! Oh!

As long as its the more realistic kind, not the fantasy kind... More Battletech, less Gundam

The irony being that Gundam is considered 'real mecha'.

Yeah, I heard about that but never quite understood that... I never actually watched the show, but those mechs look anything but 'real'

It's very real in comparison to super mecha

Well, the distinction is generally made by Japanese dudes about Japanese media. And Japan doesn’t really do much stuff like Battletech. Armoured Core is about as real as they get on a semi-regular basis. Gundam is being compared to stuff like Mazinger or GaoGaiGar when people called it 'real mecha'.

Mobile Suit Gundam aired in 1979 and back then was more realistic about characters and setting than any robot related tv anime prior to it. Before Tomino came around, the "Mecha" genre was stuff like Tosho Daimos (has a real earworm theme song btw.).

So the true irony is how unrealistic it seems now, just shows how much anime changed in the last 34 years.

The notion of "close combat with laser swords while ignoring your long ranged guns" is a fundamentally flawed mindset.

I don't really even get that; the only blatantly unrealistic aspects, ignoring the viability of mechs as combat vehicles which applies to the entire genre, of Gundam are things like dodging lasers.

And here I am just thinking that super robots are a lot more fun than real robots and Battletech style mechs.

Indeed! One could easily try to justify it with various in-universe explanations, but it would always be that, a justification. It is inherently unrealistic as a viable combat tactic... But awesome! How is this any different from mechs themselves?

Mechs were so expensive to make, they didn't have enough currency to make lasers. :D

Asmo, directing rhetorical questions at MLS is just asking to be disappointed.

Inb4 "Hey, that's not very nice".

I wouldn't put it quite like that... I agree.

Bel, your brother was banned for a pretty good reason; ignoring members and the rules, back talking mods, and alternate accounts. How would you propose to us that he has changed his ways and is worthy to come back?

She said "please do NOT UN-ban him". She is not arguing that we should lift his ban. The double negative likely tripped you up.
