The Demon Cycle RP
Long ago in a time nearly forgotten by mankind, a time when humans prospered under the watchful eye of the sun, humanity had progressed to a point of technological warfare that exceeded their ability to control. Nations warred with each other openly and excruciatingly after having forgotten about the only enemy they should have ever cared about. The Alegai. Demons of the core.
Deep beneath the crusts of the earth in the lightless underdark of the very world is the core. Total black beyond anything conceivable dominates the area and is bathed in the rich taste of pure magic. It is here the demon queen and her consorts conspire for the downfall of the meek humans that dwell on the surface, protected by the day star that burns demons to ash and obliterates magic.
Humans went to war in the time of the Deliverer, a man so infused with magic that he was said to be invincible. Capable of lifting 12 ton rock demons with his arms alone. Untiring after days of endless combat and planning. Wounds that would kill a lesser man instantly only fazed the man for but a moment. Hundreds of Thousands of Alegai died on his spear in those times. He had bested the Demon Princes of Nie and sent them screaming in terror to the depths they came from, dragging the hordes of mindless monsters with them. For years he waited for the Princes to return and fight but never did they appear. Soon after man had forgotten of the demons and built for themselves these nations. Nations made to destroy others.
The Deliverer refused to join a side and disappeared without a trace. Only a tomb with no corpse inside marks his existence.
But the Demon Princes never forgot the war of man and magic. Not in a million years would they forget when food fought back against them so viciously. They waited, and waited some more, never allowing the drones to surface and slaughter the unsuspecting masses. 200 years after the Deliverer vanished, the Demons returned.
In 9 hours, almost all of mankind had been annihalated by the tidal wave of teeth and talon. The wards, sacred writing that used the demons magic against them, had turned to myth and superstition. Only a small number of humans bothered with such things in the rise of technology. Only those who were 'paranoid' saved the lives of the ones who survived that first night. Brave messengers rode out in the day to deliver the knowledge of the wards that allowed humans to live on in relative comfort. Day after day they built and grew. Working diligently in the daylight to grow food, hunt wild game, and build small hamlets and towns. More than 500 years would pass as generation after generation inherited the sacred words to defend themselves from the relentless pursuit of the Demons when the sun finally descended.
Even though humanity has regained a small measure of itself back, they are still small and weak creatures in the eyes of the Demons. Just because a defensive ward is drawn does not mean it will protect you. Each and every ward is designed to repel a certain species of demon, and a single smudge of ash or a sudden splash of rain can destroy a carelessly made ward, allowing the demons to enter the protective net. Always to disastrous ends of the ones inside.
Wood Demons - This demon stands around eight feet tall with tough barklike armor. Normal fire does not affect them, but demon firespit could set them alight causing them to kill most Fire demonds on site.
Fire Demons - The smallest of all demons, barley eighteen inches tall at the shoulder with the ability to spit demonfire. The most common of demons and normally first to coalesce at night.
Wind Demons - One of the largest if you count the wingspan. It's the only coreling known to fly. Its weakness is its thin skin on the wings, and that although it can be majestic when flying, it is clumsy on the ground.
Sand Demons - Standing almost as tall as a human these demons are miniture versions of the rock demons, but with weaker armor. They are found almost exclusively in the deserts of Krasia where they hunt in packs.
Rock Demons - Standing several times taller than most humans armed with vicious claws and a huge, club-like tail these demons are among the fiercest and hardest to kill. They are known for their massive size, immense strength, and rock-like thick skin.
Stone Demons- A smaller cousin to the Rock demon.
Snow Demons - Large cat-like creature with thick white fur and covered in horns and spikes, able to spit ice that can completely freeze an object or person at a moments notice. They hunt in the Miln Mountains and only come down to the lowlands with strong snowstorms or very cold winters.
Water Demons - Most common near Lake Laketon these demons have tentacles and attack ships at night. People of Fort Laketon use seal nets to trap these demons and avoid attacks.
Bank Demons - Large frog-like creatures with long toungues that are capable of grabbing people, dragging them underwater and drowning them. Their mouth is large enough to swallow a human whole, and it is filled with rows of small, sharp teeth. Also called "froggies" and are found along the banks of rivers.
Mimic Demons - This demon has the power to imitate living beings, but is only seen to use its power on demons, humans and one rodent. Can become a perfect copy of whatever it wants, to humans it can imitate appearance and even their voice; to demons, it can take any demon form and even copy its abilities. Each is mentally intertwined with a mind demon and acts as its bodyguard. Often they are completely controlled by their mind demon.
Mind Demons - Having lived thousands of years and being extremely powerful, these demons are considered Princelings. They are small and almost childlike with large, bulbous heads and possess little in the way of physical strength. They are smarter then most humans and possess the ability to assimilate the knowladge of other beings by eating they grey matter of their brain. Their power is beyond normal demons as they can pass through most wards, but not stronger ones. They have the ability to enter the minds of people without noticing, being able to go through their memories and even being able to see what they are doing at the present moment. However, there are wards that prevent a mind demon from entering the mind. As seen in The Desert Spear, the mind link can be used both ways as when Arlen fought with this demon he could see visions of the core. Each Mind Demon has one Mimic Demon permanently mind linked to itself and serves as a bodyguard of sorts. The Mind Demons themselves had comments about "High Princes" indicating that their may be different breeds of Mind Demons.
Despite the overwhelming numbers and the insurmountable odds, there are those in the harsh desert of Krasia that to this day take the fight to the demons. Their culture is derived entirely on the premise that fighting and killing these abominations is the surest way to win your place in heaven and sit at the grand table beside their god. Though even these brave, or very stupid, people still fight the demons at night they are incapable of slaying them without the use of clever traps, tunnels, pitfalls, and extremely powerful ballistas designed to pierce the thick scales and hide of the Corelings.
Krasians have a strict society. Women must be clothed head to toe in black, and white if they are the sacred women of the pavilion. Men are taken at 8 years old to train to be a Sharum or 'footsoldier'. They are the mindless and loyal supporters of their city leader, though not all of them get along. Each Sharum belongs to a tribe in the home of the Krasians, "The Desert Spear". An immense walled city warded thoroughly to prevent any Demon from accessing its walls.
The only exception is the massive stone doors of the Maze. A gauntlet designed to lure in the Alegai and throw them down to the pits where they cannot do anything but wait for the sun to obliterate them.
The tribes are Anjha, Bajin, Jama, Kaji, Khanjin, Majah, Sharach, Krevakh, Nanji, Shunjin, Mehnding, Halvas.
Each tribe ranges from very large to very small, with a few of them training their men in extremely specific ways.
The Greenlanders, or "Chin" as they are called by the Krasians, are simple farmers and country bumpkins. Though they are generally a great deal taller and stronger than their desert dwelling enemy, they lack the brutal training of a true Sharum who could kill most of the Greenland folk with his bare hands in a number of brutal and efficient ways.
Class: (Warder/Musician/Scout/Messenger/Worker) *See below for explanations*
Weapon: (You will find these after the story begins, but you may choose what you use now.)
History: (You have been on the road, never to return home. Tell me what drove you to this and why.)
Warder - Trained since a young age to a master, you are learned in many forms of not only Defensive warding, but the usage and creation of warded objects such as shields, rings, amulets, Warded circles used by messengers, and the like.
Musician - Music soothes the wild beast and the same holds true for corelings. A talented musician with the knack for fine music can control even the most savage of corelings with their musical prowess. Make them dance, make them flee, make them bow before you. The cords you pluck, pluck at the cords of every coreling.
Scout - The Krasians entrust the duty of frontline scout to only the bravest and most respected soldiers. They rely on fast weapons such as knives and chains to slow down a pursuing enemy or incapacitate a coreling long enough to find protection. Most of these scouts are trained to use a 6 foot tall collapsible ladder, which they can climb to the top of and stand without the need to brace it against something. Widely respected and very deadly.
Messenger - The free cities of Miln and Fort Angiers are responsible for a number of things. Letters and small packages. Goods and services to all Hamlets and small towns, often they sell salt and cloth manufactured from the larger Forts. Despite their job they are trained in ward-craft and armed with an array of spears used for not just the corelings, but bandits aswell. Fast and deadly with a long reaching jabbing weapon they are easily one of the deadliest enemies when armed and wary.
Worker - The common name for a hamlet patron. Be it a Woodcutter or a Miner, each man dedicated to his job is gifted with a large and burly physique, and are nearly tireless from the work day they endure to meet the demands of Fort Miln and Fort Angiers. They supply the bulk of Minerals, meats, eggs, vegetables, raw wood, and most other needs readily. They work harder than anyone else in the short daylight they can to meet the demands, resulting in powerful bodies capable of enduring many hardships.
