Right. You are right Dorian which is why I am a bit nervous about starting one up again. It takes a lot of work.

As for the idea.. a global scale power out is always the first thing to do in most cases. So I guess I would have to work out what exactly would be the cause. I haven't put much thought in it, really.

Also I don't see why civilization can't be the reason why civilization would fail. We are practically our undoing, in some form or another.

There are a lot of very plausible, very real, very simple reasons human civilization could crumble.

Not all of them would be super fun to RP though. I like a certain level of detachment if an RP involves tragedy and survival X.x

Because so long as people are alive some form of civilization will re-emerge, same is true of technology. They're products of human beings after all. For the 'no more electricity at all' scenario you mentioned earlier that would require either magic/cancellation of physical laws or every human being who knows how to produce electrical current to die and all documentation to be destroyed. All that would be left would be people with below 70 IQs.

So for me it's simply a problem of suspension of disbelief.

I am still tossing around an idea about something like that. More inspired by Dark Souls, though, than true rogue-likes. The characters would be people who can't truly die but keeps getting reincarnated with altered personalities, abilities and so on. The last immortal people in a fantasy world gone apocalyptic, either out to fix it, or just get their true death.

One problem I'm having is the "start over from the beginning", geographically, every time someone dies aspect of those games. In an RP you have multiple people, who you shouldn't split up needlessly. Further, in an video game, starting over is usually a few hours of time, in an RP, it can be months of effort nulled. Not fun. Thinking something like a multi-path dungeon with different parties, and you get reincarnated in a new one when you die. Another problem is how to introduce the "learning" aspect of rogue-likes that I think is so addictive about these games. The idea that you die until you learn how to tackle a problem. Again, an RP would take 10 years if people were supposed to die 10 times on every trap.

I think if you want something that's really like to a video game rogue, it should be done as a tabletop RP, so you can play and advance faster, thus start over more and do tactical stuff with dice and skills what not that is so bothersome to work with in this medium. The whole reincarnation thing I like a lot as a story conceit, though.

I'll make it whenever I get enough time and energy to run two RPs, unless a better idea comes around.

On a different forum, we were playing around with a similar idea. The idea was that we werent really playing as characters, but rather their powers. These powers would require hosts, which would be sought out randomly. If the character dies, this power would simply pass on to the next host, retaining the knowledge it had gathered in the previous "run".

It would've allowed players to grow with their powers, but not lose everything when they died... Well, aside from items. They'd simply be locked out of the dungeon the group was exploring at the time.

The main problems we ran into, was that it would require a good, solid system to generate chances. (i.e the idea would be that there were chance moments, resulting in high risk, high reward moments. Do you want to open that door, with a 60% chance to die, or just skip it, maybe losing out on interesting trinkets).

The idea never really got much further than that though, as nobody wanted to work on creating a system to compliment this.
