Is it possible for the forum to have sound bytes?

Postby Wulfespinndel » Sun Feb 02, 2014 8:30 pm

As the title implies. The reason why I'm asking this is because I'm part of a video streaming website that actually lets users have a 7 second sound byte that plays when their mouse pointer hovers over their avatar.

I thought it would be pretty cool to have this, but really I'm just wondering.

"As she raised a glass of water, everyone exptected they'd be asked the "half empty or half full" question. Instead, with a smile on her face, she inquired, "How heavy is this glass of water?" The answers called out ranged from 8oz. to 20 oz. She replied, "The absolute weight doesn't matter. If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my arm. If I hold it for a day, my arm will feel numb and paralyzed. In each case, the weight of the glass doesn't change but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes." She continued, "The stress and worries in life are like that glass of water. think about them for awhile and nothing happens. Think about them for a big longer and they begin to hurt. And if you think about them all day long, you will feel paralyzed - incapable of doing anything. Always remember to put the glass down."

Please no automatically playing sound in any way, shape or form. It's horrible website design.

It's not automatic, as I've said the sound only plays when you hover your mouse over a person's avatar. A person using a sound byte is indicated by a speaker icon on their avatar as well. Just don't hover your mouse over the avatar and you'll hear nothing.

On the other hand it would be wise if nobody plays any pornographic sounds as a part of the rules.

If it does not involve me explicitly allowing sound to be played then it is automatic. I hardly see much worthwhile in implementing it. People might play your sound once or twice, but after that hardly anyone cares. So the rest of the plays are accidental (or now I have to actively watch where I rest my cursor, which would be irritating). There is a reason places like Myspace with excessive customization died out.

Fair enough I suppose, I could imagine your scenario.

On the other hand you could make avatars clickable.

That would probably still go against EagleMan anyway. I'm sorry to bring this up again Eagle, but let's just say that I don't want to be the next cause of you getting fired again; the last thing I'll ever want to feel in this place is great remorse. Still curious about Thomas's thoughts though, but I can vouch for your vote not too have this feature however.

One idea I have though is that we can have add an option that lets users turn off the sound bytes. If this is possible then users can be relieved of any annoyance that comes from this, which makes it convenient in return for forum browsing discretion.

I was joking. Avatars are already clickable and they take you to an users profile page.
I really don't think this is something that will become implemented ever, not many people are savvy enough to set up their avatar when they come here, much less upload a soundbyte while paying attention to filesize and stuff that can't simnply be magically limited with scripts.
