Peppermint in and of itself is just bitter (okay peppermint the leaf of the plant is not so much but peppermint the extract sure is). When you add sugar to it, it can be bittersweet, depending on how much sugar versus how much oil of peppermint you are talking about. There is a tea cocktail I sometimes make myself on the weekends that uses a lot of extract. I can add the lemon, orange, lime, yuzu, and vanillas with a liberal hand. Even the anise and rosewater go in in quite generous dashes, as does the Canton. the peppermint goes in in drops, two or three of them, and one drop over makes the stuff instantly to bitter to drink.
But since I like the analogy Blood Lord has created, let me give my own variation; as bittersweet as a horehound slug.
