Allow me clear up a misunderstanding.
Being original is something that is impossible for beginners, because it requires experience. "Imagination" is not creating something out of nothing. Can you imagine a color outside the visible spectrum? Of course not. Imagination is the process of combining
what you already know
. For example: a dragon is just a dinosaur with its proportions altered
, and combined
with the wings of a bat, both animals being ones humans already know
. To be able to draw something, you must already know what it looks like.
Now, you may ask that why you can't draw a car for example, if you know what a car looks like. The answer is, you don't know what a car really looks like. To quickly identify objects, the brain create "symbols" for them. Whatever objects that fit the general symbol will be recognized as what that symbol represents. For example, this would be the symbol for a car:
When you see anything that can fit into that generic image, your brain will call it a car. This is easy to see when you ask a kid to draw a car: the symbol is likely what they will draw. Which is also why a car like this
strike you as weird, because it doesn't quite fit into the car symbol.
To draw though, a symbol is not enough. The only way for you to know what a car really looks like is to draw from looking at a real car, or a photo of a real car. Draw from what you see, and observe carefully all the features of the car. Keep drawing cars, from different angles, and different cars, and eventually, you can draw a realistic car from just your memory and imagination:
With that said, the car is still a very complex object. If you want to draw every details on the car, you probably still need references. But unless you want to go hyper-realistic, that's not really necessary.
So yeah, it's not that you can't be "creative" or "original". You just need to draw more from observation, build up your knowledge of different objects - a "mental library", and then use it to create new things.
