Anime omits an arc and a few details and has a slightly different ending, but it's a pretty faithful adaptation.

Madhouse generally does good adaptations.

Does anyone else think Near is boring? Its been a while since I watch the show but from what I do remember, he seems boring. Just like L only without Kira and instead of loving sweets he loves toys.

I liked him.

What sets him apart from L, is that L valued intelligence first and foremost. He was fascinated by Light and allowed him on the team, even though he knew very well Light is most likely Kira. But Light was equal to L in terms of intellect, and that fascinated L enough that he took the risk and paid for it.

Near was all about following abstract rules/morals, he was 100% certain Light is Kira, but still refused to kill him, to honor L. But even though he knew Light is incredibly intelligent, he hated Light, because for him sticking to rules was more important than intellect. He loved puzzles, so I think he saw Kira as someone who cheats in games, so to speak, since Kira abused his powers to gain an edge over his opponents.

They are different.

You are apparently unaware of the concept of "waifu". Basically, a Japanese guy made a video of having a "marriage" with a DS game character, and posted it on Nico Nico Douga. On 2ch some anons(and more often tripfags) referred to their favorite fictional female characters as "waifus", their pronouncation of "wife". The video was originally meant as a gag/inside joke, but similarly to the angry German kid video, it took off insanely and the concept of "waifu" took a life of its own.

Of course, 4chan took it up and trolled the concept to all hell, there are some weeaboos on /a/ who take it way too seriously, and started practicing it as "lifestyle", but luckily they are in the minority.

Pics of anime/manga/video game characters wearing wedding dresses are often done by both the trolling and the practitioning side.
