I believe someone by the name of E.R.M. Griffin (http://deaddoll00.deviantart.com/) started the whole thing. She created the Grim and Mandy family, and Bleedman used her permission to make a comic about their kids, which is as we all know called "Grim Tales".

Not sure if this is entirely accurate, but that's as much as I could figure out...
