Hyrule Warriors: a Dynasty Warriors style Zelda game

Postby Sigment » Fri Dec 20, 2013 9:53 pm

Yup. Tecmo Koei, the creators of the Dynasty Warriors franchise, is now working on a Zelda game. While it looks great to me, I'm not sure others would agree.

Their One Piece games are quite fun, so I expect this will be very similar and appeal to a lot of people.

Yup, its on my list of grabs for a Wii U now after watching that. Of course I'd get it just because its a Zelda title, but it looks great fusing the Zelda action setup with the Warriors series horde setup.

Yeah, I'm pretty glad I bought a Wii U this week.
This game is definitely going on my "to get" list.

Not sure how this would play out. I mean there seems like there could only be a small handful of characters unless they give us a dozen different Links which would be awful.

If you look at the video (0:38), you can see was appears to be some Hyrule soldiers running around. Or are you referring to playable characters?

He means playable characters. DW typically has a wide selection of characters, so how big would their Zelda game's selection of playable characters be here?

No where near the scale of Dynasty Warriors Gundam that's for sure.

Senel's got a point. I can't really think of any other warriors in the Zelda franchise that are as well established at fighting as link. Maybe Princess Zelda/Sheik.

Sheik, Ghiharim, Ganon, Impa, Nabooru, Ashei and Darbus.
Only Ghiharim and Ganon are evil characters. These seem to be the only viable warriors from all the games.

Dark Link & Fierce Deity is what comes to mind as Warrior sort of characters. The latter is also playable, and is even as his name implies to be some sort of mysterious demonic (who is also being embodied within a mask just to recap.)

The big part of DW is that the wide selection of characters is supposed to give enough incentive to replay the game enough times that your forget you're just hitting one or two buttons the entire game. Sengoku Basara has something like 15-20 playable characters and everything else by Koei is well over 20-30+.

If there's only several characters and if four of them are Link this'll tank.

That right there is the main concern. The game may be enjoyable that first time around, but without a wide enough roster of characters the game will lack the replayability to stay that way.

One Piece: Pirate Warriors 1 only has 12 characters, the downside to that game is the stages for the characters are based around where they enter the actual manga/anime e.g Brook only gets one stage because Thriller Bark does not exist in game and after that it's Sabaody Archipelago before the timeskip.

Some questions about the nature of Dynasty Warriors, for comparison, given the history of the creator.

How deep is the combat of any given Dynasty Warriors game?

Are we talking combo depth (if perhaps not so goddamn insane with the divinity-caliber weaponry) of something like... God of War/Devil May Cry/Bayonetta?

I can't imagine a Ninja Gaiden level of difficulty.

Is Dynasty Warriors not about being in large-scale battles across a campaign that you win?

DW doesn't have insane combos or anything, and you're not taking on enormous enemies either. In truth it re-envisions a part of ancient Chinese history that I believe was called the Era of the Three Kingdoms. As a chosen character, you fight through hundreds (and in some cases thousands) of enemy soldiers, occasionally encountering officers that you need to defeat, until you find the commanding officer of the enemy force and defeat them, winning the battle. Later games added more depth, requiring you to do more specific tasks in order to win. The Empires spinoff series was a lot of fun, bringing a fair bit more strategy into how you win each battle, as well as the game itself.

Honestly I can't do the game justice just by describing it, but if you like "one against many" type games, you'll like DW. I'd recommend 7 or 8, since those two have done the best job so far. They both also include Online Co-op gameplay, I think (I know 8 does).

This is true for any Omega Force/Koei games, One Piece having two games with gameplay similar to other developed franchises including Samurai Warriors, Dynasty Warriors: Gundam and Bladestorm.

Samurai Warriors being based on the Sengoku Period of Japan (just like Sengoku Basara), and Bladestorm being based on an era known as the Hundred Years War, being waged between England and France.

I noticed that link was using different weapons in the trailer, a regular sword n' shield, the master sword and later the fire rod, also the item next to his hearts changed so I guess you can equip different weapons and items throughout the game too. and as for other playeable characters there might be new people made for this game besides the usual, since I think I saw someone dressed differently from the other soldiers there right after the dodngoro rolled past link some on was standing infront of link before it went to the next scene.

Bladestorm wasn't the typical DW game from what I remember though. It was more about controlling units on the battlefield and it was much easier to die if you ran around alone.

In any of the other games like DW/Gundam/SW/WO it was much easier to basically be a solo god and tear up everyones ass.

Don't have Ps3 so I haven't played the OP games.
