Creating a TCG

Postby Remni » Tue Aug 17, 2010 11:43 pm

So I've been in the process of doing this for awhile, and just havent gotten to it for a bit, but I have a TCG, called Dithrandir, I've been working on for a couple years now. Built my own rulebook, have nearly 200 cards ready for it as well. Biggest thing I need right now, besides actual artwork on the cards, is people to playtest the game. I was wondering how many of you would be interested in trying the prototype for it I currently have?

I'll warn now, the game is a bit complex, but you should get the hang of it rather quickly if you're any fan of TCGs and Tabletop games. It requires both 6-sided dice and probably some tokens. You'll understand when you read the rules and see the cards. This is part of the reason why I need some people to help me with testing it, so I can flesh out some of the things in the rules. So if any of you are interested, post here and I'll send you a PM with the zip file.

I'm currently working right now to update the way the cards are designed, as in their basic look. I want them to look.. well less basic. Let me know if you have any problems or questions on how certain things work.

I was never into trading card games besides Magic the Gathering. And that took me a while to get into.

Good for you, but I have got a bit much on my table right now to give it my undivided attention. Perhaps in a month or so when my schedule lightens up.

Sending it your way now. You'll be getting all the cards I currently have made so far, as well as the rule book. I'm still working on trying to set up some specific test decks to try out strategies.

JesusChrist wrote:I was never into trading card games besides Magic the Gathering. And that took me a while to get into.

Well it's just a prototype, so I'm just looking for opinions and such.

That's quite alright, I'm going to be working on it for awhile still I'm sure. Definitely gonna need to find some good artists to help with it at some point.

Hmm...curious of how this turns out.
I wanna try it myself also.

This reminded me of me & my friends trying to making our own TCG. But we were just kids and munchkins. Around 8-12 years old, I think.

Haha, well this game is actually somewhat based on a book I've been writing off and on for the last 8 years. I designed quite a bit for it's own universe and such. Different races, creatures, planets, even the ship types. I have a forum site dedicated to it where I put all my information in I come up with. Hasnt been updated in awhile though.

Anyways, sending the PM.

Munchkin is such an awesome game, I miss playing it.

Thunderbolt wrote:Me and my friends play Pokemon, Magic, and UFS all the time. It would be interesting to try out your game.

Sending you the PM. You'll probably notice a few influences in the game, namely one from the LotR card game (planet cards). It works a little differently of course. Another influence was from a tabletop game I played pretty often, Warmachine, which you'll see on the cards with HP if you've ever played the game before. The dice mechanic I came up with is something totally different though, and it's probably what I'm most interested in opinions on, cause even though it adds more random elements to the game, it also makes it more interesting.

We called ours "Mon2ter Cards", which is Monster Cards 2 series.
But we we're acting like Yu-Gi-Oh and stuff. At the time, we were inspired by it along with Pokemon

I know of a good online engine you can use so we can play this over the internet.
If you can somehow send me the card images, and the rules, I can do it all for you.

If you want to do it yourself:

Shake my hand, join the game.

Well now that's interesting. I would certainly love to try it on an online environment so I can personally help with testing it. I had thought of trying Apprentice before to do the same thing, but didnt really want to spend the money on the full version of the thing. Not only that, but I dont exactly have the time to give my full attention to the coding and everything that's involved with it.

I'll go ahead and send you the file in the PM. It has all the card images and the rulebook included.

Well you only need 2 dice. When I playtest with my brother, we usually use 6, 2 for each of us to keep track of your AP (you'll see when you look at the rulebook), and then another 2 for rolling during combat. But you can just keep track of your AP on paper really. I'll send the PM to you.

The way I play it currently, I've printed out all the cards and made a couple random decks, and the cards are all to actual card dimension when you print them out. I just cut them and slid them into card protector sleeves like you would a regular MtG deck. You can use wet/dry erase markers on the sleeves, which is helpful for tacking off the HP on the cards.

I plan to, I'll probably find some people to commission for some artwork. My gf is actually going to be helping with redesigning the cards.

And I know it's probably hard for those of you who do have the game to picture what some of the races look like, since there isnt anything on them. There are 8 races total in the game, but I'm only introducing some in the game for now. Planned to hold off on others for expansions.

Better yet, have some extra dice handy to use instead. I have friends who do this with MtG cards after he buffs them.

You'll need a LOT of dice then, lol. Any of you taken a look at the rulebook yet?

Oh, and I'm working with tomas right now to get the game placed on the CCG Lackey program, so hopefully by the end of the week we'll have something online working so we can playtest it out on there. We'll let you know when it's finished.

I read half way through and I have to admit. It's interesting. The game seems like one I may have to watch a few games to fully understand though.

I own a set of 36 matching 6 sided dice. :D
