Free games with ads - discuss

Postby Glahardt » Sun Sep 02, 2007 12:11 am

Recently, Ubisoft made a three games available for free on FilePlanet.com, and they are Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Far Cry, and Rayman: Raving Rabbids. But of course, there's a catch - in-game ads. I've already downloaded Far Cry and from what I've seen, there's ads on the main page, and also in the loading page. Oh, and also somewhere before the main page, the crappy voice doesn't help.

Well, discuss.

BTW, all ads are presumed to be US ads, since your Ubisoft account has to be set to the US to install the game. In Far Cry, it's a McDonald's ad, narrated by some half-dead guy.

To me it is a way for them to get profit from third-party organizations.

I have no problem with in-game ads so long as they are not subliminal, are not they 'in your face', and do not disrupt gameplay. Audio ads for example would be unacceptable unless they were playing on a radio/TV in the background of some level or something.

LAWL.
Actually, I'd rather have that... Without audio. But there's no TVs in Prince of Persia, so what can you do? And there's not enough TVs and billboards in Far Cry. If they really want it that badly, they should've given Far Cry a McDonald's multiplayer skin, it'll be hilarious.
Getting better narrators helps, too.

Also, just played Prince of Persia, it's McDonald's too, meaning Raving Rabbids should be the same.

Well what I mean by subliminal is rapidly flashing images during gameplay at a speed unnoticeable by most. Movie theatres got in trouble for it at one time, or so I hear. <- That's bad

Having something playing in the background as part a of the level is fine though.

As long as it doesn't interfere with gameplay and it's completely free, no complaints

Some games would work beautifully with in game ads. If you replaced some billboards in GTA with real ads, I'm sure no-one would really notice or care.

But as discussed before, certain games don't have such media available. Buggered if I know how they'll manage acceptable ads. Thus far, it's pretty much just ads at main screens, before the game and during loads.

Which, in moderation, isn't too bad.
