I would love to see Twitch play the original Spyro the Dragon.

newer generation games that are not aligned to a grid will never be chosen because the number of movement commands you can make in a three-dimensional game are too much. unless the original spyro was played on the SNES or Gameboy and I am misremembering its origins.

No, PS1. But it only needs basic keys, since I believe there's an option to have the camera auto-turn.

Trust me, key-wise, it's possible. The problem is getting people to not fall off the, dare I say it, ledges....everywhere.

Oh, and what the hell is going on in the twitch video right now? I don't think that's still Pokemon Red 0.0

Re: twitch plays pokemon

Sat Mar 01, 2014 4:56 pm

No, the first Spyro game was on the Playstation and was a 3-D game.
And I agree with BR, it would take ages (hell, it may be impossible) to beat that game. Games that would suit Twitch Play..." would be games that had a grid, such as the Pokemon series or a Final Fantasy game.

Re: twitch plays pokemon

Analog stick control makes it unfeasible to issue commands unless the commands are severely stunted, in which case the controls would act similarly to a game on a grid, and this might have the effect of making the game utterly unplayable.

the fact that a grid-based game has a very precise and very small pool of logical progression to how it sees commands is what makes it possible for the commands to be queued up and executed in a way that allows for thousands of commands to be interpreted.

Re: twitch plays pokemon

Sat Mar 01, 2014 5:04 pm

Pretty much.
In grid games, you have 4 options to move: left, right, up, down.
For 3D games, such as Spyro, you go all directions: left-right, diagonal, and so forth.
In short, 3D games would be impossible to play.

Re: twitch plays pokemon

Sat Mar 01, 2014 5:06 pm

Well, Spyro doesn't need the stick. You can easily beat it with the arrows keys, especially if the emu allows two arrow keys to register at the same time, thus causing angled movement. Spyro's attacks hit enemies he's facing even without using arrow keys and actions requiring multiple keys, such as double jump, could be done by just entering XX.

The original Spyro was VERY simplistic. If this modder can implement a system like an/dem, I'm betting they can adjust.

And again, people said PR would be impossible to beat. :P

hmmmmmmmmmm. let's think here:

a grid game might also be impossible to play without a fixed perspective.

a fixed perspective is a primary limiter on HOW movement commands are interpreted.

as long as up, down, left, and right stay the same on every screen, the commands stay the same.

3D games with moving cameras means that the commands are constantly reorienting. THAT is why they are impossible.

Oh, I forgot to add! Just like with Start9, the game could use a multi-key-use system. For games like Spyro, though, up5 would mean up is held for 5 seconds. In fact, even up1 must be used to move one second.

I'm just going to interrupt this discussion with a video someone uploaded of essentially the finale of Twitch Plays Pokemon, in case anyone missed it and would like to witness just what went down.

The problem is that it's not a gird system. Meaning what if you need to move in a clean S shape.

3d games would be a nightmare. There is plenty of grid based games we can choose instead.

You don't. Not in Spyro, atleast.

Re: twitch plays pokemon

Sat Mar 01, 2014 6:31 pm

i promise you krest, if there is no fixed perspective, which most grid systems use, the controls will be constantly reorienting, thus truly impossible to get to work. people already input dozens upon dozens of commands in pokemon, and smash into walls and do nothing for hours at a time. that's with a total of four movement directions, dude. :(

in a 3D game with an analog stick for movement, you have subtlety and nuance in movement that no amount of "anarchy" vs "democracy" control input could solve. seriously, man, let it go. *frozen*
