Fantasy has plenty of subgenres, I think there is just too much emphasis on creating these sprawling stories that limits their appeal and ability to say "fuck it" and do something out of left field.

Fantasy, sci-fi, supernatural, horror all fall under speculative fiction.

Hate standard tolkien fantasy. There's so much more potential in the genre, like Exalted is a good example of.

Sci-fi, I think, has more diversity to it. I guess you could wish for more, but we still got everything from hard science over trans humanism to space opera in it. The "Space Marines vs. Aliens" genre is getting a tad trite in the video games industry tho.
