It's not that it's particularly dirty, in fact, I usually couldn't care less how clean it is. I just wonder what it would look like all waxed up, clean interior, and the like...

All of the major brands have had quality issues for the past decade, dodge has transmission problems, ford has had motor issues especially with diesel, gm seems to have had body issues and they seem to have started having those same tranny problems.

Yeah, my dad's F-150 had a valve stem break, jam the engine, and crack the block 2 months after we got it.

Valves breaking is rare, sure it wasn't the timing belt breaking and the cylinders hitting the valves and causing a shit ton of problems.

Valve broke off and jammed a piston or something. We still have some of the pieces of the valve. :P Took a while for the mechanic to figure out why the engine just stopped. We were driving to Disneyland, car pool lane on the 91, just starting to catch up to traffic, and the engines just dies. No sputter, maybe a quiet thud, but goes down to 0RPMs fairly quickly, and the truck coasted to a stop.

That sounds like the timing belt snapped the crank got out of time with the valve train and the valve was on a down stroke while the motor was on an upstroke and crashed into each other. How many miles did the truck have on it when it happened?

Uhm, not too many, it was used, but I don't have that number off the top of my head. Timing belt was fine when they opened the engine, I believe.
