I'd support fixing legitimate genetic disorders that actually affect quality of life and that can be fatal.

I'm sorry, Cal. What happens, happens. I do wish something could be done about 'em.

I keep quiet most of the time because in all honesty, I cannot argue to save my life because I know nothing about anything. I cannot join you people in several topics that happen to come about around here.
But he irked me, man. He succeeded in rustling some jimmies. So I gathered my thoughts and spoke them.

@whatis

But then there's ethical issues.

Take Down Syndrome for example.

I wish it on no one, but seeing people with the Down Syndrome, you cannot deny that there is something to be envied in that lifelong happiness.

@Fummofu

But bigots, in my opinion, are to be pitied, not hated. Don't waste your hatred. Give him your pity.

Thankfully there are researchers working on isolating the nasty genes and attempting to eradicate them

There's also a bit of an issue with that also.

Perhaps it'd be best to leave some diseases and such alone.

I mean, we have to think. If we eradicate all diseases, what's going to keep human population in check?

But I think parents should at least be afforded the option to correct disorders, especially because while Down Syndrome isn't fatal most other trisomy disorders are.

just because you can't do anything about it doesn't mean it's not wrong

what if some kid was born with two heads and as a result died from medical complications?

that's wrong, isn't it? the majority of your post was great, it's just that line we have trouble with.
Yog wrote:Blaming it on a gene or whatever is retarded, as well.
like this one line of yog's otherwise perfectly good post
it probably is down to a gene or a few bits of our DNA that decides whether we're gay or not

unless they discover it is environmental

there's nothing wrong with attributing the features we have to our genes. our genes make up nearly everything about us. respect them and recognise their impact.

I'm willing to bet it's partly genetic, but the larger part is probably hormonal especially hormones in the womb.

i gotta raise issue with this too

should we forget about curing cancer because, shit, we gotta have something to keep the population in check!

what do you think sex is for?

self preservation.

the ultimate form of self preservation is immortality. within the next few hundred years, i am pretty sure a human being will be born that will not degenerate with age or disease and whose only option of fatality is willing cooperation or an awful accident or assault. hopefully sustainability issues will have been sorted out by then, but if not people will just have to deal until they are.

You are right in many ways.

Humanity's population is on track to cap out mid-decade. When you get people in a modern, Western society, birthrates tend to flatten out, and some countries are actually having fertility rates drop below replacement values (a value of 2.1 is 2 kids for 2 parents, and the extra .1 is to account for people who don't reproduce). Europe is actually having it pretty badly, though immigrants are keeping birthrates up some, once they're integrated into society you can expect a similar drop. The reason the U.S. has stayed higher than average is because of the large Hispanic population, but we too are starting to see a decline as Hispanics more fully integrate into society and shed the culture of reproducing like rabbits.

The fact is in the long-term the greater worry is that we're going to simply die out. In a modern economy it is actually highly inconvenient to have children. In agricultural times it was a benefit to have children as they could contribute to the household income. Now children are basically an extra chore - there are perks, but they are basically an economic drain for at minimum 18 years, and often more than that now as people have to become increasingly educated just to stay competitive in a globalized economy.

Overpopulation is only a threat in underdeveloped places like Africa and Asia. As these places modernize their birthrates will decline. Modern economies punishes those who have children, so the net effect is that we have less children. Reproductive technology can only do so much. There are too many women who are trying to have kids in their 40s for whom it's just too late. Most people don't realize just how much age matters in terms of reproductive capacity for women. If you want both a career and a child as a woman, you're either going to have to take a delay in your career or risk not being able to conceive at all.

TL;DR overpopulation is a short-term concern in terms of the humanitarian crises, but long-term the real concern is that the population actually dwindles out. It's already becoming a problem in places like Japan.

Shit... it's April Fool's Day.
As I saw the creature, I was as white as an egg. I was so scared I might crack from fear. As the humanoid began to lunge after me, I was walking on egg shells from how scared I was. It grabbed me, took me to its station, and cracked me open. The last thing I saw were my yellow insides cooked on a pan. Human nature is as evil as a rotten egg.
