it's mostly the fact they benefited from government programs - they had very cheap education, and now they are getting much more out of medicare and other things than what they put in, even adjusted for inflation
And they're the same generation leading cuts on social spending, demanding everyone else to tighten up their belts - basically, they got theirs, and they don't care about anyone else. People invested in them (part of the reason why the generation before them is called the Greatest Generation), and they reaped massive benefits from that, but they don't want to invest in the next generations in turn, as their parents had in them.
A generalization of course, but it's how it's worked out for the most part.
