She should take up the problem with her teacher not accepting her absence with the administration.

I, however, fail to see how someone being concerned enough for her to call the police because she was a danger to herself as a mean or evil thing. I wish someone had done that for me back when I was a teenager and cutting. Cutting is NOT a good way to deal with anything. Ever. Honestly, if she had messaged me and said she was cutting, I would have done the same thing. Because I fucking care, even if I don't know her that well. Not for the least reason that if you're telling someone that you're cutting...it usually means that you want help.

And finding a new diagnosis and getting her medication adjusted is a good thing. Hopefully it will treat the root cause and she won't feel the need to PHYSICALLY DAMAGE herself anymore.

I am very sorry that she feels the need to behave in a self-destructive way. I am very sorry that she doesn't see herself as the beautiful person that I think she is. I am very sorry that the experience was harrowing to her and that the medical staff wasn't kinder to her.

I do, however, think that the action on the part of her friend was very much warranted and actually proves that he cares for her.

Hana pretty much summed up what I was going to say.

Especially since we just lost Ethan, I don't blame the friend at all.

He should have been more clear, though.

But I agree a little bit, but due to the fact that I've been in a similar position (No self harm, mind you, but I've been fighting with depression since the beginning of my school years), I know how people can OVERREACT. It's one of the most annoying things to tell someone over and over, I'm NOT going to kill myself, and then have them disregard it by virtue of depression.

So I can understand how Lily feels, somewhat.

Said friend never told the police that she was suicidal. Just that she was inflicting self-harm.

And to look at it from the hospital's point of view...are you going to believe someone who's cut themselves when they say they're not suicidal? Uhhhh, no. Precautionary hold for observation is standard. I'm really sorry that she feels she was treated badly. I'm really sorry she was uncomfortable. I'm NOT sorry that she got held overnight and got to talk to a doctor, though.

Having been there from cutting, sometimes you could cut deeper than you're going for. I don't blame the friend.

And even if you don't cut deeper than you're going for, infections happen. Really BAD infections could happen. You could kill yourself without ever meaning to do so, surprisingly easily.

I'm not saying I disagree, but sometimes, people overreact to SUCH an extreme that it's stupid.

But you know what, I'm going to chalk it to up to not knowing that much about the situation. I don't want to make any calls if I don't know the whole story.

People do overreact, but I'm failing to see where the friend overreacted in this situation.

It's all standard protocol, self harm of any kind is listed as being a threat to yourself and they have to bring you in unless they risk a lawsuit.

The calling of an ambulance didn't seem necessary.

But eh. Like I said, I don't know much about it aside from the post. While I agree with a lot of what you guys are saying, it seems a bit rough to me.

Girl was cutting. Okay, so only 10% of cutters are actually suicidal, but still. You as a policeman going to make that wager?

How are you going to live with your decision not to call an ambulance if she turns out to be one of that 10%? Oh, and then there's the fact that the family can sue for wrongful death in that case.

Putting her in observation for a night doesn't kill anyone. Leaving her alone MIGHT. How is that overreacting?

It's university protocol to avoid lawsuits, all cases of self harm have to be passed on to the police, police will find you to be a danger to yourself which means a mandatory psych evaluation(again lawsuits).

Damn you, Hana.

“you know, I’m surprised they admitted you”

That's what bothers me. That's what's kicking off the feeling.

It makes me think that there's a bit more to it than what's being said. I'm not going to pry, but I'm basing my suspicion on that statement.

They should definitely disregard ANYTHING you say by virtue of depression. If you're not in a stable mental state nothing you say bears any weight. You may be lying, you may change your mind in an hour. It's why people in mental asylum are not asked what they want when doctors decide what drugs to prescribe them. Chronic depression is the first step to losing yourself. And self harming for endorphin rush is much like any drugs, a temporary relief followed by another low. It is NOT wise to use euphoric drugs to battle depression.

Pah. I've never had serious thoughts of suicide. If anything, my last resort is what I did some years ago: to become a hermit and cut myself off from the rest of the world.

As much as medication helps, there's not much in the way of the offering of emotional support. Lily didn't mention anyone that would be talking to her to help her recover. THAT would be a good move. In personal experience, there have been so many times where all I wanted was someone to talk to, but all I got was something to mellow me out, because no one seems to want to treat the underlying causes.

Frankly, it's pathetic, and probably the reason why so many of these cases end badly.

Just because YOU haven't thought of suicide, it doesn't mean that someone else might not.

I understand, but I still stand by my second point.

There's too much focus on sating the symptoms, and not addressing the underlying causes.

But it's hard to treat the underlying thought patterns that you can try to control without also trying to fix the underlying chemical imbalances through meds, psychiatry has to be a two prong attack. Also, talking is only useful if you willing to talk and Lily has admitted in the past having distrust for psychiatrists.

Sadly, so few of us can fix our own problems. Outside help is so important in so many cases.
